Thread: Rotorua fishing

It's Rotorua family holiday time again. Only place we ever go outside Northland because a) it's not Auckland and b) it's not too far away. Don't think I'll have time to hunt, but wouldn't mind catching a trout. Think I'll stick with my spinning outfit fishing spinners, jigs and soft baits. Any information appreciated. Cheers.

Taupo has better fishing

We did think about it, but not this time. Rotorua has more to do for kids and that is the priority. Anything for a peaceful life!

I always liked Okataina, sheltered lake, bush walks.
Used to have plenty of game, pigs, wallaby and deer, suspect thats all gone now though.

Be great place for kayaks.

For your kind of fishing, try:
Any of the stream mouths feeding lake Rotorua. Hamurana and Nongataha would be my pick. Also worth a go is the Oahu channel that links lake Rotorua with Rotoiti. Spin the water at the weir where channel starts (lake Rotorua end). Another spot worth a heave is from the jetty almost opposite Okere falls store, or the ‘trout pool’ down the side road at the falls store.
Neighbours grandkid landed a 71b trout on a pink lure whilst fishing at McLarens Falls park, near Tauranga. Hope that helps.

Heaps for families to do in Taupo and a lot of it is free. As above. Keep driving.

There should be a public open day at the BOP NZDA range at the TECT park on Sunday...just sayin'....

My boys are down the Ngongotaha stream every day at the moment the fishing is starting to pick up.
Under the bridge in Ngongotaha village is going pretty good with some good size browns pushing up the stream
Gold bead nymphs are the go
And as stated above mepps style spinners and soft plastics are the go for spin fishing
The waiteti stream will be fishing good to but haven’t fished there for a few weeks

Ngongotaha stream sounds like a busy place!

Yeh, the condition factors are amazing, best in years. I attend two annual private tournaments which have been going for over 20yrs and the last one in early March had an average fish weight of 1.98kg. About ?? 5-8yrs ago, it once got down to 1.1kg, ie terrible.

The Ngo is indeed popular but there are spots everywhere for a keen fella chasing a cunning brown.
I also fish Rangiuru out Tarawera and they're often beautiful fish, message me if you would like, I should leave the stags alone this weekend.

That worked out well given time constraints and family commitments, thanks for the advice. Got a nice rainbow and very close to getting an even nicer brown. Next time!
