Nice, smoked salmon!
Yeah mate… have taken 11 since the start of the season (April 16th)….these “springers” are fighters… big runs this season…we leave the natives(released 5 so far)and only take the returning hatchery fish….. plenty for all (limit is 20/person) but you are allowed 2 licenses ,making it 40)
Nice, looks tasty :)
2 weeks ago I was in Dunedin, green island was waiting by the creek and theres a bloody salmon trying jumping up the concrete flood protection... Can't say I'd want to eat it looking at the state of the creek all of 1m wide.
Your spot looks a lot nicer. 40fish / season would make for a lot of meals. Do you smoke most of it or freeze it?
Both…. But vacuum pack … and never let it sit too long…. Fresher the better….
Do a salmon bake for the mates…. Like to share the spoils…. Always the right thing to do
This one this morning… they are beauty’s… took 6 hrs ,but it was totally worth it…. The 15 minutes it took to get to the boat and watching my boy “ play the game” was so worth it… amazing what yr kids do
I sat there drinking a tinny whilst my boy “barked” orders at me ,to position the boat, get the net, don’t do that,do this,…. Magic…..

That's a fine looking fish.
Difference between the “Native”and “Hatchery”…. Is simple
If you look at the tail U can see the Anal fin ,right above that is the adipose fin… on the “native” fish they are apparent, still there…. On the “hatchery” fish the “adipose” fin has been removed before they are released into the wild as yearlings….. the fin doesn’t grow back
Big fines for taking native stock… it’s working ,the native numbers are coming back to life and the hatchery fish are exactly the same….. plenty for all…. It’s taken a while ,but it can only be a good thing
Nice fish, reminds me of the days on the Rakaia and the Waitaki rivers.
Had to throw this one back today… Native steelhead…. The rear adipose fin is still there… such a beautiful fish!!!

And the Rangitata. Those were my three childhood streams.
I grew up fishing all those 3 as well use to catch 30-40 salmon a year back then and a small 1 was 22ish lbs and use 2 get 1 every year over 35lbs
