I personally dont like salted berley I much prefer fresh- land based after kingis we would take 3-4 skipjack and 3-4 bags of cheap porridge- fillet the skippies for bait and the rest chopped up with the porridge for berley - that worked - spooned out slowly - the best I ever had was when the local sports store freezer went down and I bought 2 cartons of semi defrosted pilchards for $10 just dumped them into a bucket and smashed them up- snapper went mad on it- we got 18 in about an hour and lost the odd one to - I quess if I was going to keep berley then frozen would be the way to go - the odd time a mate has had salted it does not look or smell good at all - but the only way to know is try it

Fishing over the Kaipara bar and using berley is a great way to have sharks in plague numbers......
The only fish attractant I have used out there is Mussels. Buy a big bag of fresh mussels, crack the shells with the back of a knife and drop them over the side...
We dont allow berley to be used on the charter boat due to sharks. With 26 guys fishing, you have no idea of the tangled mess that occurs when someone hooks a shark...
I have often found also that when guys use a foul smelling bait some of the fish coming up that have been robbing baits smell like they are rotten.......same would apply to berley in my view......Fresh is best
