Private land signs for across the river I think. You can walk along the fence line(true left of river)Thats what we did many yrs ago when we were young(50+) and fit.3hrs later at the old hut with a bit of stopping looking at deers.
Look on utube walking along the fence line.

I was in there Kings Birthday weekend.
Less than 2 hours walk to the hut (Spurs). Small block and pretty popular but a neat place. It's surrounded by private land so make sure you know where the boundaries are. The fire fills the hut with smoke.Name: P1000073.JPG

They’re quite visible on satellite photos though, so have a nosey yourself.
There is another set of historic bunkers north of the South Branch Ashburton River off Peaches Road.

I went for a wander in there earlier this week to test the new knee.

As usual all animals spotted were on the easement side of the fence.

Watched a nanny and a yearling tahr for about 5 minutes in the riverbed, about 100m from the doc block. Was pretty cool to see, they weren't fussed by me at all.Name: 20240618_134710.jpg

None of the animals in there are very fussed by humans because they know where the boundaries are and they are always on the safe side.

The hut is pretty cramped and drafty, it is almost warmer in a tent! Stunning landscape though. Here's a picture from the walk in last summer.

Sorry about reviving an old thread, but what is access like to get there? Ie. is the road in suitable for vehicles that aren’t 4WD? Considering going in for a wee look around- if I see some animals then even better

Car is fine, head in past lake opuha up Clayton road till hit fox peak ski field road..that's a hard left with picture of fox on sign.about ten KMs up dirt road to road end car park. Then 7 KMs walk till you hit the block. Basically you have hit block when major creek crosses track. Left hand boundary is the river/ fence and right hand boundary is the track / fence. You get to the tip of V first and block gets wider from there. Will be plurry cold this time of year.

Can imagine it would be cold. Was even thinking a day trip to have a look around. Trying to look at some places reasonable striking distance that I can do day trips where I can’t be out the whole weekend

I was up there for an overnighter not long ago with the family, carried a pack full of bluegum in knowing it would be cold, but even then it wasn't really enough.rats or mice ate an entire leftover crumbed chicken pattie in an evening. Animal wise, Seen a few deer and pigs, mostly on the private. Also seen plenty of trout in the river on walk in. Cool spot, take gloves, hat and a puffer jacket! Name: DSCN1197.jpg

Sounds like the Stone Hut Mick. With snow on the ground its warmer outside the hut than in it. And also no firewood

Certainly sounds like one of those places where you opt for a tent over the hut, maybe even give the dog a cuddle for warmth
