    Swimming

    On the same lines as @gimps Running thread who's regularly swimming for exercise?
    I like beer, chocolate and all the rest of the shit that's good at building a tyre around your middle. Was thinking a bit of swimming would be a good, low impact way to keep fit.
    Any advise on the best way to go about it? Was thinking evenings would be my only option as mornings are too busy and I don't have a consistent enough lunch time to squeeze anything into.

    Go to the pool and check out the middle aged swimmers . Most have a gut that would make a publican proud . I think its one of those muscle memory things once you get swimming fit you can swim for hours and don't seem to get much from it . Still better than sitting on couch eating chocolate and drinking beer no doubt

    Always liked swimming much better on the body than running, got the tyre now to help me float!

    @kiwijames

    I swim like a fish ......... can easily put in 30 or more laps without any troubles.

    Had to complete a timed 800m swim to get my Divecon Cert

    Didn't slim me down any.

    My wife is trim as ..... she does two hours of Cross fit three times a week and two hours Box fit two times a week then plays Netball on a Saturday and runs 10kms a couple of mornings a week with her mate.

    Seems to work better than swimming.

    Just saying

    Cheers

    One of my mates has swum for an hour every day for years.
    He came to a half hour cross fit class, and nearly had to be carried to the car afterwards.
    Seems swimming training makes you a great swimmer, but doesn't help with fitness for much else.

    Rather than just swimming get yourself a board and fins and work on the mid section by using "dolphin" kicks. Few lengths of that works wonders on the abs.
    When you are swimming use it as a time to chill out as well, very good for the head games of every day life as you should be practising good breathing techniques just like in yoga and that's very chilled out.
    I agree with Grotto though it isn't great for anything other than swimming and cardio work out.
    I found road biking is great for losing the mid section though, put in a couple of hundred k's a week with big bastard hills and watch those pounds fall off.

    If you want to lose weight, look at your diet. Cut out alcohol and wheat, and the results will be pretty obvious.

    If you want to get fit, decide what type of fitness you want and then choose an activity.

    Unless you do an insane amount of exercise, without a diet change, you are highly unlikely to lose weight.

    I swam competitively at school. It is very good for toning, cardio etc, low impact if you have stuffed joints, but not likely to make you loose weight unless you swim for a couple hours a day.

    Exactly, without a clean diet your not doing a great deal to lose the gut bag. swimming will get you swimming fit, running will get you running fit, cycling will get you cycling fit.
    Cross fit will get you everything fit, its the most insane all over body and lungs workout I have ever been involved with. I am very running fit, but my first cross fit class nearly killed me.
    Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

    Yeah, but you have to join a cult and post cross fit pictures on Facebook constantly so probably not for me.....

    @Maca49

    I gave up trying years ago.

    Did I mention she runs Marathons and competes in Triathlons during summer.

    What scares me is when she gets home from Box Fit and says to me "Stand here and I'll show you a new move we learned tonight".

    Cheers

    hahahaha

    I recon you'd be right at home in a pair of those lycra nappy pants that all the really cool riders go for.

    Cheers
