Thread: 2015 Rotorua Long Range Field Target Shoot

This year's Rotorua Long Range Field Target Shoot (Woodstock 1000) will be held on Saturday the 21st of March, 2015. I currently have 3 spare entry spots available.

A few details about this year's Woodstock 1000:

• There is a $40 per competitor entry fee. Bring your own drinks and snacks; there will be an afternoon BBQ put on after the shoot.
• Targets will be set at distances between 100m and 1000m (yes, meters). Most targets will be between 450m and 700m.
• In general any rifle of any calibre between .243 and .338 will be allowed. If you are shooting a calibre with a projectile weight more than 300grs or a muzzle velocity more than 3200fps please let me know beforehand as it may affect how I set the shorter distance targets.
• You will need 60 rounds of ammunition per competitor. You might want to bring a few extra.
• Turn up ready to go! There will not be a practice session and no sighting shots!
• Competitors will compete in squads of 3. All competitors will be required to bring optics suitable for scoring and a time keeping device.
• Rifle and equipment sharing is fine between no more than two people.
• You will be required to walk the shoot course (about a 1km long) and carry all your gear with you.
• All of the shoot stages will be timed!

Entries can only be confirmed by myself or the other organising person. This is not a "just turn up on the day" event. Because of the difficult nature of the event competitors are expected to have their sh%t sorted prior to turning up. This is not really an event for someone just getting into longer range or just wanting to try it out.
If you want to come along and compete then get in touch. If I don't already know you then i'll probably ask you some questions about your shooting experience or simply let you know the event is difficult and prepare you for maybe not doing as well as you might expect.

If you want to come along as a spectator then get in touch as well. If you are wanting to get into this sort of shooting then coming as a spectator allows you to meet a bunch of competitors, have a look at what gear they are using and you may well find yourself invited to a future event. There are about 5 forum members already coming along and it would be great to get a couple more in attendance.

Yeah it is a bunch of fun... but seriously challenging. After a couple of years where I have had a couple of complaints from competitors about the difficulty though I feel I need to point it out now.

Still, we had a competitor (a hunter, not a target shooter so much) last year that this event was his first competition shoot of this style. He ended up 5th or something, shot really well with a rifle he was obviously familiar with. He had a good competitor spotting for him as well (which helps) but that takes nothing away from him shooting very well. Every year we have also had competitors who have hit less than 10% of their shots for the day... Generally, if a competitor makes it over halfway in hits they are in serious contention to pick up the top individual trophy.

Do u need to have a spotter?

@Dirtyface, not exactly sure what you mean when you say "spotter" so here goes:
You can turn up as an individual without a mate to spot for you (i.e. spotter) but we are using squads of three this year so chances are someone else can and will spot and score for you.
A spotting scope (i.e. spotter?) is recommended but not required for spotting and scoring for another competitor. We recommend spotting scopes but competitors can use their rifle scope or a good pair of binos (with a good solid support) if they wish.

Please don't you put me next to some bugger with one of those noisy antisocial muzzle brakes Simon.

Whaaaat!!! You don't think I would putt all the loud, antisocial, muzzle breaked rifles all in one squad, do you???

There was a .375 Cheytac at the last long range shoot I attended... you'll be fine spotting for that wouldn't you? Just make sure you have some crampons... or tampons for your ears...

Cheers Simon and family for putting the shoot on, I think I shot as well as my wind reading ability allowed I can really see why guys love the big magnums and 338s etc for this sort of shooting

My shooting was pretty atrocious, but learnt heaps. Need to do lots more practise for this type of shooting

Bloody "horse of the year" event in Hawkes Bay, so plan to stay over in Napier/Hastings got shelved and we got home around midnight.

Yet another top shoot Simon, thanks to you and Malcolm for doing the hard yards and organising it!

Loved the few obstacles which threw a spanner into the works as opposed to just the normal shooting prone off a bipod!

Apologies for the holes in your loop hole... Hahaha

Surprisingly the wind was creating a decent amount of havoc for myself, scopedand Grasshopper, even though it seemed constant and calm enough..

The 2015 Woodstock 1000 went very well. 18 competitors turned up to test themselves and their rifles against a reasonably tricky course. Every course stage had a different challenge or tested a different aspect. Loophole tested natural point of aim, no bipod stage, swinging target, tank trap tested positional shooting, camouflage net just added frustration, long targets were a little past 1000 yards and everyone finished with a 5 shot group at 240m.

Weather was great, fine and hot with only light winds. Scores were up on last year as a result. Good to see a few forum members there as well. I took a bunch of photos and will post a couple when I get the chance.

Yeah was a great day ( pitty my shooting was a bit rusty ) & good to catch up with everyone, a neat spot & a very well set out shoot

I was luckly enough to get a bed a Malcolm's, so had a couple of drinks with Simon, went over the day and had some laughs ( including a few hunting stories ) on Saturday night,

Also had Malcolm tidy up the trigger on my CZ 17hmr, Boy what a difference, it breaks beautifully now & would recommend him to anyone Cheers Malcolm.



PS- Was good to see a few forum members there, pity that it seems alot of "internet experts" would sooner talk the talk then show up and demo what they can really do in the real world
