    Barnard Tactical Model 07 rifle.

I have been thinking about taking up F class shooting in 308 caliber for a while now and have been thinking about which rifle to go for.
I was originally thinking a custom build, but I was looking on the Barnard site and I saw this rifle. it costs $5280 plus GST.

Have any of guys fired one before, or know about them?

Any information about this rifle or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers guys.

Suggest you drop @BRADS a pm. I seem to remember his new custom LR rig although not 308 had a Barnard action on it.

Ifn you haven't already tried F-Class shooting the your local rifle club will probably rent you a rifle and amminition at club days to give it a try.

You'll need to add a scope, bipod or rest, rear bag to the Model 7. More $$$.
For longer ranges with manually marked targets you'll need a spotting scope of good quality binoculars.

My son started in FTR using a borrowed rifle, we then went to an off the shelf .223, added scope, bipod, rear bag. (he was a skinny 14 year old).

Now I've built up a rifle around a Barnard P-Action in .308, 32" True-Flite barrel, custom stock, NightForce scope, Sinclair bipod. A good rifle, shoots well. Added cases, dies, projectiles for reloading.

A great sport with (generally) helpful friendly competitors.

    Hi,

It is a very nice gun, and great NZ made actions, world class in fact. However rather pricey for F class, note its plus GST and plus a scope.

A Barnard P action for 308w which is single round about $1600.
    Chassis about $1000~1400,
Krieger Match grade 30/32inch hvy barrel about $1000.

    = (roughly) $4000 incl GST

    Sightron Scope 8x32 or 10x50 about $1800

If you want a bit of flexibility then yes the SM version of the action.

then spend years learning to read the wind...

If I don't catch the bug, that's OK, I will have an accurate 308 rifle.

I would look to see if you really need a repeater Barnard using AI rem700 detach mags , as it brings 2 things that are maybe not ideal to using this in 308 FTR class ? , one is the mag lenght , the AI rem700 mags , both 5 & 10rds restrict the OAL to similar to a Rem700 short action , ie donot allow you to seat bullets long , and other is that the repeater barnard action takes , Rem700 triggers only , ie its not available with good Barnard target trigger , all the other single shot Barnard actions , use the nice Barnard trigger .

Just somehting to think about .

The Barnard trigger may be nice but they are not that reliable in dusty environments - you have to keep them religiously clean or else your'l be having slam fires. Nothing wrong with a rem pattern Jewel trigger & seem to be a little more tolerable of dust etc.

I am aware they can cause problems , but so can the tight Barnard action it self , my point is he is shooting a target comp , use a target rifle , and be ready to strip it down and flush out brakekleen or 556 etc , usually have time on most comps .
I have seen not only the Barnard trigger cause problems , but the whole Barmard action it self , in particular the firing pin assembly etc .

My point is he is trying to have a bob each way , me go fit for purpose , ie dedicated , its up to him .

At the moment I am aware of 2 guys in NZ shooting 07s on the FTR circuit. Both up in Auckland.

The 07 is very well constructed, and is surprisingly stiff, much more so than a Dolphin stock.

As mentioned before, I do not think the magazine fed option is a benefit in FTR. It is a very expensive rifle, but hey, that is what some guys want...

My 2 cents : visit a local club, shoot with the club rifles, and figure out if the sport is really for you. Having spoken to you before, I suspect you'd be more interested in service rifle and field shooting than fullbore. Anything "tactical" or "sniper" related is generally frowned upon in fullbore target circles.

Very keen for an insight into Barnard firing pin problems? Also mag length not an issue for FTR as loading will be single shot, not from the mag.
