    Factory Ammo Range/groupings

Pretty open question, But what are some ranges/groupings to expect from factory ammo out of a Tikka 7mm Rem mag.
I realise theres a few things to consider, Ammo/Rifle set up/conditions and the biggest factor being the shooter..

Dont want to get in to reloading yet as have to many hobbies and limited time as it is.

Have only tried 154gr Hornady sst with mixed results up to 500 yards.

    Cheers!

To be straight up, further and more accurate than most can shoot themselves especially in a hunting situation

Last tahr trip, mate was shooting tahr easily out to 600 metres with his Sako A7 7 rem mag and factory hornady ammo.

1inch /100m is my rule of thumb, 400m =4 inch group... It should be a lot better but its a starting point

Also remember, a rifle that shoots an inch group at 100 all day long, does not necessarily shoot a 4 inch group at 400 all day long.
The further out you get, the more variables come into play
    270 is a harmonic divisor number[1]
270 is the fourth number that is divisible by its average integer divisor[2]
270 is a practical number, by the second definition
The sum of the coprime counts for the first 29 integers is 270
270 is a sparsely totient number, the largest integer with 72 as its totient
Given 6 elements, there are 270 square permutations[3]
    10! has 270 divisors
270 is the smallest positive integer that has divisors ending by digits 1, 2, …, 9.

Good call, "most" modern rifles will outshoot the nut behind the butt if set up right. I'm sure it's me that's holding my t3 back from getting better groups

Cheers for the feed back, looks like I can’t blame the factory ammo then...

Should probably try some other ammo as well, what’s some factory rounds worth trying?
Just want to be get confident out to around the 500yard mark

Worth remembering, inch, assuming it holds, is only 2 inches off your actual aim point at 400, an moa rifle (or slightly more than moa) will kill all/any of our big game animals at 400 as long as your placement is correct to start with. If I was hunting with a 2" smelly, I'd be happy as out to 300 on any reasonable sized animal.

Most people are turning up their noses at anything that doesn't shoot close to a one hole groups these days! and it aint necessary!

The Hornady Precision Hunter ELD-X would be well worth your look.

I got .65 with 162gr ELDX precision hunter and .85 with 154gr interlock white tail. Both at 100 and both were hitting the gong pretty hard at 400.

Many people who post on here shoot 1" at 100 yd with Tikka and factory ammo. Those who don't, don't, so you get a biased view. It depends a lot on your eyesight, the scope, shooter experience and specially on sandbag/bipod and other equipment used. "Mixed results" at 500m are normal. However, 1.5 or even 2 MOA can be enough to shoot successfully.

"getting confident at the 500 mark" is not realistic with factory ammo.

This is because you will need to shoot at least 1000 rounds to establish trajectory, learn basic wind and develop shooting technique skill. This is too expensive with factory ammo and it will be difficult for you to get enough of just the same batch and ballistic performance. You'd have to reload, even if you don't get any better grouping. Grouping is only the first start in longer range shooting.

I suggest, with your first 200 rounds, you get confident shooting animals up to 300m for a start and do a bit of field target shooting on steel plus some on paper at a variety of distances (laser ranged) before going further on animals. A first round hit on a 12" target at a random distance around 400m, under hunting conditions, is not easy. You've got a good rifle and caliber, as good as the best available anywhere. Go for it.

I handload so maybe I expect more, but if a rifle shoots 1 moa at 100 I would sell it.
Maybe you dont need a 1 hole group, but it's still a tighter group than 1 moa. If you start with something average like 1moa, it's never going to get better. Once you get into allowing for wind, longer rangers etc, the bit you saved testing at 100 (half moa, instead of 1moa) is going to help.
