Hey thanks for making the table @gimp. We should have some more Tikka, Sako and Browning results with the ammo going out today.
Seems the cheap Howa's pisses all over the expensive brands, acurracy wise.😉
Shots in numerical order as best as I can remember. Once again cold or cooler shots in the black before blowing out.
Hahn, what rifle was That?
The weather here today was WINDY. But we went to the range to challenge ourselves. I was joined by "Half MOA Tikka Tony" and Frank. Tony has Tikka T3X I. 223 that he purchased recently, fluted 20" model. And it's been giving him "issues", he has found it to be very bullet fussy and had a long list of projectiles he'd tried but failed to get to shoot nicely . . . and that list included Hornardy 73 ELDMs.
So he went off to the 100M mound and commenced shooting with Fiocchi 55gn SP and 55 Hornardy V-Maxs. Neither were up to his standards but he got going on the 73s. Half way through the 10 shot string he requested a break to check his target . . . And dammit I forgot to take a picture but it looked easy sub MOA. Back to the 100M mound we went in the wind and he completed the group. No doubting "Tikka Tony's" shooting, pretty bloody good for a rifle that didn't like ELDMs.
That group measures 0.97 MOA. with an excellent MR at 0.9cm
My Tikka was at hand, I tried a few groups of Fiocchi V-Max ammo and considering the wind, gusty over our right shoulder, I was pretty happy with this:
But then after Frank had put a few rounds through our rifles (he's a "one rifle 270" man)I was looking for something else to do so pinched Tony's ammo box, he had 10 rounds each of the favored loads for his Tikka, these were 69 TMKs and Sierra 69 HPBTs over 24.5 of 2208.
I didn't want to use his last ammo so resolved to do 5 shot groups. Well bugger me but they shot astoundingly well in my Tikka too, I'll copy his loads and try some 10 shot groups in due course.
I'm a bit scared to measure these but the small one with the HPBT is less than 13mm, which is less than 0.5 MOA.
However enough Tikka Talk. This thread is about setting reasonable expectations for factory rifles with a proven factory ammo. So it was time to test another Howa, this time HFP, which is a Howa Mini 1:8 20" with the lightweight barrel.
And here it goes:
Now this is supposed to be a 10 round challenge but the last two shots were fired after the supressor came loose, so I've excluded them. Happy to discuss this . .. when do you leave shots out of a group?
Anyhoo, not the world's best group but totally minute of wallaby to 300M and deer to 250M.
I still think they count to be fair that flyer in my group was when the rifle slipped off the water bottle I was using as bipod
You asked for honest 10 shot groups its to easy come up with excuses/reasons if you edit groups imo
We all have good and bad days
