The .22lr is just the easy button in every regard.
Cost - Availability - Ammo options - Manufacturer options etc etc .
I have a 22 Mag and wouldn’t be without it , but it is used for a few specific tasks and isn’t used that often.
I tried the 17 HMR and think it’s a great concept / fun / chambering but it just didn’t quite do what I needed it to do in regards to lethality at the longer ranges where it in theory it out paces the 22 Mag .
The original post asked about Rimfires and it didn’t take long before Centerfire creep entered the thread as it so often does .
In my unsolicited opinion if it’s too far for the 22 Mag then stop thinking Rimfire .
Get a .22 lr with a Silencer for quiet Sub Sonic use . Then find the ammo it likes with both Sub and High velocity ammo being mindful of the appropriate projectile type / construction / velocity that suits your use and go buy 1500 rounds of both types ( remember that those two ammo types probably won’t shoot to the same point of aim , but you will soon learn what scope adjustments or changes in hold are necessary) and call your search done and dusted.
My bet is your Subsonic ammo will run out before the High velocity does![]()
