    Another newb in North Canterbury

    Hey all

I finally convinced the wife to let me get my FAL, and I'm (almost) all set up now so super keen to get amongst it!

First up, I'm looking for somewhere to sight in my secondhand Remington 700 .270. I know I could go down to the club at McLeans Island, but please let me know if there's a local spot that's cheap/free to shoot at.

Next, I'm eager to find some local hunting grounds and/or companions for weekend expeditions. I'm not looking for trophies, just some stalking experience with hopefully a bit of meat for the family. I'd wondered about starting with Puketeraki, but if you've got any other suggestions for places I'm likely to pick up a deer or pig, I'd be interested. I don't mind a bit of a hike or having to rough it.

All the best, hopefully I see you out there soon.

    Cheers, Rob

Welcome aboard Rob. The former soldier in me wants to say get a haircut to you forum handle.

Thanks Rushy - the army didn't want me back in '96, so don't get much of a say in my hairstyle! Too deaf apparently - I aced all the other officer recruitment tests.

    welcome Rob
happy to take you some of the places I have been, I'm a shift worker so weekends can be few and far between but I'm sure w e can tee something up I've not shot anything yet other than a hare.
found plenty of sign so I think it's an issue of bad timing more than anything so if your keen to come photograph sunrises and risk not shooting anything your welcome to join me

Sounds good. The whole exercise is as much a reason to get out in the bush as much as it is to shoot something, so once I've sighted the rifle in I'll drop you a line. I'm an office boy but manage my own time, so might be able to wangle a mid-week expedition if that's what suits you.

Bad timing for me, ski season is starting early but once we close for the season I should have plenty of time on my hands and always keen to spend time in the hills
