Hey guys,
I’m Martin, based down in Central Otago these days but originally from a small farming town on the coast. I’ve been reading the forum for a while, usually after late nights searching for advice on rifles, boots, and the never-ending debate about good packs. Finally decided to sign up and share a bit about my own path.
I didn’t grow up in a hunting family, but I always had this pull toward the hills. My first real taste was tagging along with a mate on a pig hunt when I was about nineteen. We didn’t get anything that trip, but I still remember the sound of the bush waking up, the cold air biting through my jacket, and that sense that I was exactly where I was meant to be.
Since then, I’ve slowly pieced together gear, borrowed rifles, and made a fair few rookie mistakes, left the bolt at home once, and another time got myself properly bluffed above the Arrow River. But every trip has taught me something, mostly patience and respect for the land.
These days I’m chasing reds and fallow mostly, with the odd goat mission thrown in for good measure. Still learning every step of the way, but I reckon that’s half the fun.
Keen to connect with other folks around here, always up for a yarn, swapping stories, or hearing about how others got started.
