Thread: I'm - we're - new!

Mrs M and I recently started target shooting. The main reason was to gain familiarity with a firearm in a sensible and controlled way, with regular instruction and sme evidence of 'getting better' at it.

I thought we'd enjoy it - I'm a technical person and love well-engineered solutions - but I remain astonished at just ho keen and enthusiastic Mrs M is. I'm sure some of it is down to the incredible help and support we've received from other members of our local club. (We've joined TSNZ too.)

Once we're more comfortable, and have our licenses (looks like a 12-month exercise at the moment) we'll look into some more hunting-type shooting. We live in a lovely rural area, with rabbits and turkeys (in particular) that I'm sure would taste as good as they look.

We were looking for a forum which covers as many aspects as possible, from targets to hunting to cooking to maintenance. We'll doubtless appreciate advice on purchasing (once we can), care and also technique.

For now... We'll browse, planning to learn.

You'll get a lot of advice here and on the range.
You'll have to determine which advice to listen to, which to adopt and which to ignore.

It's the nut behind the bolt that is usually the biggest source of error.

Mark is a top shooter, and super humble to boot. But Sam is a true star, my partner has never seen a video of theirs, but knows her laugh.

But welcome to mrs M, and Mr gjm, it is great when couples can share in an experience. Don't listen to all the rubbish about .270s, they are a great rifle for goats and rabbits to 600m, but outside of those requirements the slow twist rates with factory rifles, and poor factory ammo choices leave better options, probably best go to 8mm lebel or other more modern smokeless chamberings.

Looking forward to hearing more about the experiences you guys will have.

Welcome. Im sure that any of the local hunting or shooting organisations would also welcome you both with open arms. It can take a while to "break the ice" into any new club but the benefits ( for both you guys and the club) are worth it.

Are you looking at doing smallbore shoooting for a start ?
A lot of clubs have club rifles and sell ammo by the "block" (13 rounds which is just enough for one target), so that's a good way to start. And its a really solid skill base for all sorts of rifle shooting in future.
If you have any fullbore clubs over there, they will be running over the summer and also sometimes have club rifles and ammo.
