    New member, with time up my sleeve before hunting

    Gidday everyone,

    I'm 38, and have exploring the forum which has been great; lots of wisdom, humour and tips - the magazine posts are especially good.
    I aim to piece together the necessities to do some hunting (license / arms etc) in the next few years, as application times are long and free time at the moment is short with a couple little ones running about.

    Nobody in my family hunts so I will try to get involved with the South Auckland NZDA in time, to learn and meet some new people.

    I am eager to learn a new skill and to get out there for some horned meat, for now will trawl the forums for inspiration!

    That's my intro, and thanks for having me!

    It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
    What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
    Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
    Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
    Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
    Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
    Rule 5: Check your firing zone
    Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
    Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

    Welcome, mate. I had a similar story, didn’t bother with NZDA tho. Just got out there and did it. I’m sure there’s heaps of value in joining NZDA, but you shouldn’t think hunting is some esoteric art that you need to be initiated into.

    If you’ve got some basic bushcraft, get yourself a decent pair of binos and start by taking them for walks. It will take you a few trips before you’re regularly finding game animals, so don’t wait until you’ve got a FAL & rifle.

    Use maps.walkingaccess.govt.nz and Google Earth to find likely looking spots, then go check them out. Half the fun for me is planning the trip.

    Then practice moving quietly through the bush and stalking in on your quarry. I guarantee that the first time you’ve got a rifle in hand and an animal in your sights, the excitement will turn you into a bumbling idiot. The more relaxed you can be in that situation, the better your chance of success.

    Hey @mopheadrob, all sounds like sound advice with good ideas for me - am keen on the idea of increasing some skills before bumbling and thanks for the link as I'd not come across that yet

    Cheers for that, completely indend to get some practice in and it'd be great to meet some others more experienced. Are there any ranges near south Auckland? Found only the NZ deer stalkers near Riverhead so far that might suit
