Kaweka meals are awesome imo. Not a fan of butter chicken but all the others I ate were good.

How do you guys prepare the freeze dried food in the field. I always found (this is back in the days of Alliance Freeze Dried) that it was best to soak it in a pot for at least 2 hours before warming it to allow the moisture to get through it properly. At a push you could add hot water to the packet and eat like that, but was pretty dry inside everything and so very cardboard like.

Never add extra salt (sometimes important if you've been burning it) until after it has finished rehydrating, and preferably once finished cooking as it stops the rehydration.

You're onto it gadget. Soak it for as long as possible and then heat it at the end. Down side is that you have to clean the billy, the up side is it tastes slightly less like cardboard.

Also don't be stingy on the water. Better to be a bit sloppy than dry on the inside. Eating it half re-hydrated is bad for your guts. You don't poo for three days and then one morning you feel like you have given birth.

Back country are fine at the end of the day. Havent tried any others but could tolerate there products for a few days in the bush easily enough. Lucky for me the factory is only 3k away..

A mate had the back country ones and when they got old getting them to rehydrate right into the corners was a bit difficult

The Kaweka NZ Beef Red Wine ones are my favourite and the powdered mashed spuds actually taste real good but are a bit of an arse to clean

The cheapest source is the old pasta packs from the supermarket - chicken curry pasta and whatnot - a bit of condy in place of butter/fat, a few slices of salami as extra protein and she's a hot meal that fills ya up

After more than 2 nights bush I have to hunt into the wind cos the deer have rumbled to my farts..
