I couldn't leave good enough alone, there were a few things that were irking me about the finish on the buttstock, so I stripped it bare and have started fresh with the red oil.

Then instead of just using boiled linseed oil to finish it, I cooked up my own "Slacum" using BLO, gum turpentine, carnauba wax and Venetian turpentine ($1000/litre!) There were a few butt puckering moments cooking it in an old hubcap over a gas stove but we got there! Lucky I had my fire extinguisher from @McNotty as security!

A friend who's a farrier uses venetian turps as a hoof polish for shows. Either it's different to your stuff or he gets a discount because he has a 1 litre can of it. I certainly can't see him spending that much on nail polish for horses

I looked into using the horsey one but it is different stuff. The stuff I used is basically solid at room temp.
