What's your thoughts is it worth it ? I've just inquired about getting my 7m08 done . Quoted $300 for 100grms saving . Seems like I'd be better to spend money towards a carbon stock ? .

Hi Munsey
Not sure what type of rifle you have but probably going to make a bigger weight saving by fitting a CF stock than fluting. Possible depend on the profile of the barrel as well??
Cheers
Dino
Or you could just chuck a couple bricks in your backpack and exercise more, pay me the $ 300 for "fitness consultancy fees"
Just saying :P
Or maybe chat to VC, he specializes in lugging heavy-as-shit Sako's up and down mountains...
100g as ebf said weights will build ya arm and ya won't notice, once ya start funking with shit it can go bad and I am sure that whoever does it for you wont be offering a accuracy guarantee
Lol goes from should I do this and why plus whaddya reckon ? in 2 posts to you re a fattie loose some weight and harden up ....
I love fluted barrels and bolts cos they look cool. I don't care to much though so long as the rifle is accurate as well.. No harm done ..
I did bolt barrel (plus shortened) mill top of receiver etc on a T3 and yep it was lighter, how much dunno should have weighed forgot to..
... Lots of different schools of thought as to their usefulness.. Just do it ...
Really it's just for looks, they do look good but it don't "make the boat go faster", I doubt if you would notice a 100 g change in weight.
Other ways to save 100g, and spend next to nothing, put less rounds in the mag, drill out the stock, shorten the stock, cut an inch off the barrel
Do it then get carbon stock too [emoji106]
Don't forget to flute the bolt.
Some lightweight tallys holding a lightweight scope and your done.
I love spending other people's money.
You are welcome [emoji4]
Fluting the barrel just to save 100g is probably not worth it. As part of the whole package that vietnamcam mentioned (and don't forget lightweight firing pin if a rem 700) the total weight saving can make quite a difference, but only you can decide if it is worth it. In my experience a carbon fibre stock will save approx half a pound (200g?) over a typical factory plastic stock and nearly a pound (400g) over a wooden stock.
I went down this route with my model 7 and and saved nearly 2 pound all up, but most of this came from the stock, I would say the normal saving would be about a pound, but will cost about a $1000 all up.
Read this and you wont flute it...
My friend was going to do it, and now no chance in hell...

yet so many fluted barrels shoot so well....
I am sure we would hear about it constantly if it was common for fluted barrels to not shoot and blow up ;)
Munsey,
You could always get VC to shorten it i bit to save on the weight. Rumor has it he is a dab hand with a hacksaw :) You should see how he upgraded the mincer I gave him :) :)
No, no, no, VC has stated quite clearly that he does not own a hacksaw, he does use some large angle grinders, so the finish might be a bit rough
Good article on fluting. Never owned a fluted barrel. I note that the Accuracy International - Arctic Warefare Magnum has a fluted barrel. If someone please give me a 300 Win Mag version for verrry long term evaluation I will be able to extol the virtues of fluting.
...I think from the factory it is probably better controlled...
When you flute a stock barrel, unless it is a bull barrel or extra thick, then their is a risk if you ask me...
though I am no gunsmith, I am a mech engineer...
ive got my barrel and bolt fluted, id like to get my action milled on the top like a sako open top feed, when I get around to it. lightweight rings and all up my T3 weighs 3.3kg. although in saying that it gets out plenty and gets its fair share of use.
well I guess some people like fries with that, some people don't so its really your preference. I did it because every man has a tikka and I wanted something a little different
20mm 30 shot group on a good day, so no complaints about how it shoots, factory guarantee which mostly goes when you start putting handloads through it anyway
just whoever mills or cuts the barrel make sure they take exactly the same amount off in each flute - were talking fine tolerances here, not 0.5mm or 1mm!
Check (although barrel not fluted due to button rifled and already light'ish)
Check
Check
So its your fault I'm like this http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/co...y-emoticon.gif wait till I tell my wife its YOUR fault
But Munsey I think that while a fluted barrel (and bolt) looks "way cool" you might get a better weight loss/dollars spent ratio with a carbon stock of some type
slap 2-4inch of the barrel munsey and you will save more weight
So chop then flute and put a carbon stock on it :)
I'd be pretty happy with a 20mm 30 shot group

I doubt I will ever own another fluted barrel after having a carbon wrapped one. It gives better weight saving and has some real world accuracy pros.
If it works as well as it has on my barrel everytime I would say fluting is outdated.😆

But who does it?
Doesn't look as cool as fluting though. Though that is up to the eye of the beholder
I like the look but everyones different, looks much cleaner than fluting. Maybe carbon wrapped bolts are the next big thing haha
Then what ya deviant?
