well sending out to the good buggers on here for advice so anyknow about roofing - problem the screw saddles have gone a bit rusty - took several out and the saddle is not rusty underneath and the screws are fine just appears to be a problem on top where exposed to weather -
so two senarios to fix 1) my preferred option - paint saddles with a rust neutraliser primer paint roof in summer time -

    2) remove both saddle and old screw and replace with new screws and do away with saddle - my problem with that option is will the new screws tighten down properly given they are going back into the old hole

which ever I will still paint roof in summer

so what you clever buggers think - and what can an old fart do to stop the bloody shakes up on a roof and its not even steep - lol lol lol

I take it from that you may indeed not be talking about metal screws but rather after the bourbon is administered to a female

There should also be a large rubber penny washer sealer under the saddle bearing on the iron

Barry there's two types of roofing Tek screws.the difference is in the thread pitch.Your existing my be 'timber tites' i.e. course thread, into timber purlins. The other type is fine thread called a 'unitek'
Depending on what you have there at the moment for that long run profile they should be 65mm x 12 gauge timber tites. If 65mm x 12 gauge uniteks have been installed as they maybe flogged out.The next step is a longer timbertite Tek screws of the next gauge up- so 75mm x 14 gauge timbertites.
Uniteks are better in new build timber purlins or steel purlins

you could well classify our roof as being in a high wind area we up on a hill exposed to winds - that is why if I can get away with option one i.e paint with rust neutralizer primer and keep the saddles keen to go that way if I can ????

Those saddles are called profiled load spreading washers. And the penny washers are called EPDM 35mm seal.Your roof colour looks to be Grey Friars. The pre painted oven baked load spreading washer and EPDM seal combined are worth $0.33 cents each plus gst.Is it really worth faffing around with a paint brush?Just swap them out and they will see u out til popping off.
Generally the worse rusted fixings are close to the flue assuming you have a log burner. The soot contaminants are harsh on the paint systems, but u can upgrade to marine grade galvanizing and painting to prolong fixing life, but comes at an extra cost

What he said @Barry the hunter those saddle washers are integral to keeping your roofing iron on your roof, just get a box of colour matched saddles, with new epdm washers (from memory they come prebonded to the saddles but I've been wrong before and next gauge/length of tek screw, done in a day and you can then focus on more interesting stuff...like guns, whiskey, hunting

Galv primer paint would be my first option. Afters years of industrial roof maintainance with tks like that - spray them with a rustkill and next time the roof is painted it will be fine

no we on town supply - its damn small roof really and in town- at 72 how much longer does it have to last and become someone else's problem - the old girl next door just passed away at 92 her roof is absolutely buggered she did not care and told us some years back it will see me out - pity the poor bugger buys that place needs reroofing and a lot of it needs recladding - buy that not much change out of $150,000 I would think to fix - nothing touched for years
