Did case hardening back in trade school years ago and a couple of time at work. Don't remember if it was kasenit bit it was a carbon rich compound that you treated the outside with. Let you use a softer more easily worked material but then hardened the crap out of it once quenched.
Wasn't difficult on the parts we did (pins punches etc) but nothing like a frame or receiver. haven't done it for years

could have trouble getting Kasinite as it is full of cyanide, meant to be used in a ventilated furnace or similar i believe.

Marky your best bet is to send bits to Heat Treatments L T D in Stoddard road A K L, they Nitride hardened my Sharps action and breech block, so no wear , comes out mat grey and still can be blued .

Case hardening compounds are easy to use - lots of youtube videos on them. Some small tricks to make life easier but nothing major.

Are you just wanting surface hardening, or the case hardening colouring as well?

If it's colouring you want, hardening compound won't cause that to happen. If you just want hard surfaces, then yep, cherry red is good stuff, as is nitriding. Cherry red is nice to have around the shop anyways for small jobs. Nitriding is good for bigger jobs. Both definitely only do the surface, and your metal type may also affect what process to use.
