    Magnets 101

    Ok folks

I am needing to make up a resettable mouse trap and been busy with you tube. Quite a few of the ideas are using small magnets and I have realised that I know bugger all about them other than there's a + and - end and had a play wih a few as a kid. Can anyone shed some light on different strengths, materials etc. The ones people are using for traps are small button ones, think I'll order some of aliexpress but there are rather a few to chose from!!

Neodymium magnets are the super strong ones.

Sorry, missed this thread as I would have posted earlier.
I constantly have hard drive magnets available if you're keen I can send you a few... they are all oddball shapes and oddball backing - but they are apparently neodymium.
PM me if you're keen - have a look see on google for pics of them.

A mate of mine made a "resetting" mouse trap with a wine bottle, a board, some tape, a stick and a bucket. It keeps collecting mice until its full (get a bigger bucket) or it starts to stink too much. Works on rats too.

You get the wine bottle and tape the base to the board. You run that across the edge of the bucket so that the neck of the bottle is directly above the centre of the bucket (nearly horizontal ). Then you use more tape to tape the handle of the bucket so the handle sits several inches above the neck of the bottle. Fill the bucket with water to between 1/4 and half full. Hang the bait on the handle so that it is just out of reach of prospective mouse / rat when standing on the neck of the bottle.

Mouse runs up board looking for food. Stands on neck of bottle and stretches to reach bait, slips and cannot get a grip on glass, falls into bucket and cannot get out. Drowns. Job done and ready for next guest at hotel BooKay (Bucket with a french accent....)

Snap, one time down on the Island we set something the same. But ours was a couple of beer cans(we found them) with a stick though them. A piece of bread hanging from up above, all over a bucket. They don't last to long in the water before expiring. Problem we had was once there were half a dozen in the bucket, the next ones that fell in used the floaters to leap back out. Good fun to watch at night
