Thread: Portable benchrest

Has anyone built themselves a portable benchrest. Looking to make something myself, hopefully this something will be relatively stable. The wife doesn't seem to think a permanent one would make a nice addition to the front lawn. Would like a few ideas if someone is willing to share some pics.

I made a three legged one with a three legged stool to go with it

I saw one made of an aluminium folding work platform - looked pretty good

I really like the benches build using a Sawhorse.

Recently, I noted a modified scissors car jack being used as a rifle bench rest. The upper "bit" upon which the car rests had been modified by adding a swiveling padded rest to hold the rifle and avoid scratching..As there was no heavy weight resting on the jack, the height adjustment was able to be made just by the fingers,...a small crank could even be added to make winding easier.

Hi feratox, Is something like this what you are hoping to built yourself? This is very stable and great to shoot off. PM me if you would like more photos etc.

Something like that. Are the legs folding or detachable?

Yes they unscrew so the bottom of the table is flat to facilitate sliding it into the back of a station wagon.

Did the same awhile ago. A must have for sighting in.

Seem to rmbr an article in nz guns back in the 90's someone making one similar to Tech's with full instructions. Can have a look through the old magazines if you get stuck but likely take a night or two to find the right edition

I use a folding work platform like this:



Set it up so you are shooting at about a 5deg angle across the table with your seat just forward of the back legs, with your legs under the table. Super easy to transport, set up and use, and when not shooting is can be used as a rifle cleaning bench, saw horse or to sit your drop saw on. Under $70 at Bunnings.

I use a "work mate " folder and have a piece of 18 mm ply cut to shape with a 4 x 2 screwed to the bottom .
4x2 goes into the workmate and I clamp it all down.
Comes apart for cartage into two manageable pieces.

Old guy at our range had one very similar to the one in this article. His worked very well.
