I love it, shorten the rifle then add a scope that is longer than the barrelled action......Sounds like the sort of thing I would try...

If you decide on a smaller scope, you could almost try a pistol / long eye relief scope and mount it forward rather than rearward and have it like a scout rifle. Or go red dot with no eye relief issues. Otherwise you could look at shortening the stock, but watch you dont go under 30 inches and make it into a pistol....
