Bloody spot lighters......
It is always tragic when this happens. Hope he comes right.
Rule 8: Dont shoot your friend - he is not a deer no matter how much you want him to be
It's tragic for the guy that got shot, but I have no sympathy for the guy that pulled the trigger. What a pillock.
How does this even happen? "Geoff, jump off the truck here in the dark and we'll take it up ahead"... 50 meters up the track they turn round and shine the spotlight behind them "Look a deer with a rifle wearing camo... get 'em" *BAM* "Where's Goeff?"
Seriously...
Yea mate thats like sayin "bloody nzda presidents"

There are times when you can't beat the stupidity out of people. Esp those who pull the trigger.
I don't think it actually states in the article that the person shot was unidentified and shot 'intentionally' in hope he was a game animal?
For all we know - it could have been a genuine accident, as they do happen from time to time.... many of which could have been prevented (maybe even this one).
We have no idea what happened and probably never will.
I like spot lighting but this isnt the first time someones been shot doing it.
If people simply followed the 7 BASIC rules of handling firearms, there would be NO genuine "accidents".
Proves yet again that the most accidents are with members of the same hunting party.
Pretty bad taste there Tobes...
Probably not the best place to put it is it?
Probably getting really excited seeing eyes glow and just shoot.
Along with his cousin Abouttoo Fuckup
Seems some a quick to pass judgement with out having all the facts ,as pop shot said it may have been an Accident.
Wonder if there is anyone on this forum who has never had an accident ?
I was a t a NZDA branch committee meeting last night. We had quite a discussion on the recent incidents. One thing we all agreed on was most people that end up making a horrible mistake all believed beforehand that it would never happen to them… I am guilty of this myself, I mean I think I would never be stupid enough to mistake a human for a deer. Most of those people that have done it though swear black and blue that they were shooting at a deer – signals in their brain though…
We discussed a mindset in a lot of NZ hunters… it shouldn’t be “it moved therefore it is a deer” it should be “it moved therefore it is a human until I can prove it’s a deer”. Someone mentioned that to get a firearm license should mean you have to join a hunting club… we thought this wouldn’t be very useful cause our own club wasn’t doing much to promote hunter safety within the branch. That is going to change though, just before the roar we are going to get the club together and discuss firearm safety and a few close calls we have all been through. Try and get it to the front of our members minds.
I'd be willing to bet theres some guys out there - both experienced and inexperienced - who have come close to doing something silly and never even realised it !!!
-or- worse
who have done something silly, got away with it and never realised it
I certainly count myself as a member of both of those categories ...
Tim
I've never shot anyone. Nor had an AD, ever.
When there's an accident, you look at all the contributing factors that lead up to the event. Accidents by themselves are very, very rare. They're generally a combination of poor judgement, wrong decision making, wrong expectations on behaviour.

were not accidents.
It's always going to be a provocative topic to discuss though.
I agree with you, sadly I new Cam McDonald and his hunting partner on that day!!. Dodzy was a very close friend also so two deaths that should not have happened have knocked me around a bit and now influence when and how I hunt.I have spoken to H Worsp he is aware of how I Feel. Incidents such as these should not be called accidents.

I remember a mistake I made as a younger hunter , was bush hunting with my uncle .He had gone down the side while I continued along the ridge. A movement caught my attention ahead off the ridge ,rifle up & the white patch in my scope looked like a deers bum .
Not a good shot so waited for a sight picture, finger round trigger .It turned a little & what I thought was a deers ass was my uncles day pack in the cross hairs. On realizing I threw the rifle on the ground. Good excuse for a scope even if it was only 4x40 Bushnell on top of the old .303
jeez thats scary Chris, made you a wiser man I bet.
Hell yes ,was a big wake up call that.
until i hear it first hand the below is rumour only.
word was the incident occurred after a deer was shot, the party approached and it tried to get up, one of the party decided to jump on the deer at the same time as the shooter put a finisher into the animal.
the screams could be heard in invercargill, but after realising the injured person had only been "grazed" in the butt cheek, they dropped into KFC before presenting to the hospital.
.270 to the arse could have turned out real bad.

For all the spot lighting we did on possums, no one ever ever got hurt...it is all just commonsense...what is wrong with hunting on your own...obviously you are alot safer...
thaught the story must have been bullshit...............
