    Cost of firearms deaths

On arvo shift so watching about the only thing that classes for news on the Breakfast show. Yeah I know anyway....
One of the news items was someone who they interviewed from otago uni regarding costs of firearms deaths and hospitalization over the last 20 years.
Hospital care was about 1 million a year which they all tut tutted about.
All expressed.concern about how firearms shouldn't be easier to get.
Didn't expand on how to manage the suicides though which is a pity as from.memory these were always the most firearms deaths a year. Way more than actual hunting accidents.
Also had a dollar figure for lost life which they found from the ltnz over road deaths.
There was a statistic which I typically think I've got mixed up. They only mentioned it once, concerning the deaths and suicides.
They mentioned maori and Pacifica for one batch and middle aged European men.think the suicides were the Europeans?
    Anyone see it?

Suicides are the terrible part and always used by antis as justification for strict firearms controls.
From memory it's always something like 50 deaths a year and over 40 of them are Suicides. It skews the figures a bit

Was this funded by "whom"? Does the "whom" fund great reports of the economic, health, environmental and social benifits of hunting and shooting sports? ?????

Doesn't look very obnoxious to me.
Read it. Digest it. Then critique it.

"The more things that you can do to create steps in between that moment of impulsive thought and the point at which they're actually able to carry that out, the more chance you have that they'll think better of it and not go ahead with it," Telfar-Barnard said.

Headline: "Otago University study finds firearms deaths cost NZ up to $321m a year"

Actual data: "It showed the total cost of hospital care during the 19-year period was $28.2m"

Bullshit made up stuff: "but estimations - using the 'Years of Life Lost' measure - showed the costs of the deaths went far beyond the injury costs, reaching up to $321m per year."

So the headline should read "Otago University study finds firearms deaths cost NZ up to $1.4m a year" . They have exaggerated the actual number by 216%.

Two of the authors of the report have made previous political commentary on firearms in NZ, including support for Aderns actions. So it's likely they are affiliated with Gun Control NZ.

It gets worse for you. They are currently working on a book on NZ gun culture.

Doesn't worry me. In fact Im curious to the point of having asked to be interviewed. Who knows, they might be open to a little influence.

They certainly aren't going to read this thread and say "by cripes, they make a valid point there".

The fact that this survey failed to differentiate between lawful and unlawful causes of harm shows that it is biased and can be disregarded without further engagement

After finding that costs go up from illegal firearm possession then the recommendation is more laws?

Bolt that barn door nice and tight cos the horse has just fucked off over the horizon
