That woman should be spending her time learning to use a calculator instead of talking to the media and humiliating herself like that
Unfortunately the Select Committee will take her assumptions as Gospel. Therein lies the problem.

    This is really going south.
Nasty over reactive responses that to any outsider and hopefully some insiders make us look ridiculous.

As a community we are really good at shooting ourselves in the foot.

    Sorry @Tahr
    I think that's a bit unkind but I accept that's your view.
My take is that the majority of response and comment on this thread is well argued by numerous logical thinkers. I think the overall tone has been maintained at a high level which is commendable. And that, I think, far from making anyone look ridiculous shows the depth of concern around possible implications of how the study's info could be used against LFO's in certain circumstances.
Personally I can't see any rationale for such a study other than building up more ammo to sling against LFO's, and my suspicion is that is the longer term intention.
Call me paranoid if you like but time will tell.

If its me @Tahr and @Russian 22. are referring to, I have to say the agenda-driven research and the way media has grabbed onto it so close to the new firearms legislation have me personally feeling quite bleak, with a sense that fair play has left the chat. This comes on the heels of WA's recent changes, bans on bowhunting in South Australia and the absolute crusade against legal, responsible firearm ownership and the way we engage with the great outdoors.

No one in particular. But themes of behaving as oppressed victims with an inability to be objective.

Nah. You are implying that disagreeing on approach means that we disagree on the objective. That is incorrect.

Studies such as this are usually portrayed as factual and are soaked up by the uninform population.
Nicole puts up fact based stats and evidence and she is portrayed as a gun toting redneck.

Disagreeing is a healthy thing as long as it doesnt turn into abusive crap, which I dont see here. Sit back and read both sides opinions, you may learn something and then again you may not. And just because you dont agree doesnt mean everyone else on the planet cant put their opinion forward.

Yes. Of course, Nicole will be accused of bias by opponents just like Otago are. The Otago report is "factual" but spun and interpreted differently depending on the bias.
One thing we could use is some good academic research. There was some coming out of Lincoln from Geoff Kerr a while ago.

I was referring to the community in general. Although some of the callous comments about the value of life or tax positive are uncalled for.

There are better ways to advocate for our hobby than to play into their stereotypes.

Yeah you're more likely to snag yourself a unicorn on your next hunt. I work with academics, the ones worth their salt have real jobs. The ones left behind writing the stuff like in this article are usually living on a different planet to the rest of us.

Why wouldn't LFO's behave like they are oppressed victims? They literally are the definition of oppressed victim at this stage of the game. You just need to look at recent history to prove this as evidential. I would challenge anyone to be purely objective on the matter, in fact, many commentators are being objective, logical, and well thought out. The idea that we all want the same results but have different ways of getting there is exemplifying the divisions between us.

By saying "no one in particular' you are being purposefully vague and somewhat condescending in this context. It would seem that you are implying we should all just accept what is happening and carry on with the minimum fuss. I accept I am making assumptions here, but if they are accurate you may as well just go hand your F/A licence into the police now and watch them crush all of your guns.

This is not a personal shot at you Thar, but at the attitude of apathy I am interpreting from what you are saying.
