    Is this 'fair'?

I was told a couple of days ago about some Ashburton farmers/farm hands loosing their FAL because of 'meter maids'!
Seems that these wee snoops not only check parking meters, etc but have been seen to get up close to what are obviously working vehicles (dirty, dusty, muddy...your typical farm ute or your off road pride and joy). They have a face up to window close look inside to see if there is a firearm in the vehicle.
If they see a firearm, and it's obvious that the owner isn't in visual contact with the vehicle then they call the cops to come and sort it out.
Seems that a couple of guys Ashburton way have been done over already.
Could be an urban legend? Maybe...but just in case...remember to hide that firearm under a blanket or coat, etc when you park up (and keep in visual contact with the vehicle).
Anyone down Ashburton way able to comment on the meter maids snooping on behalf of the Police?

Well, if it "fair" or not doesn't come into it. IF they leave their firearms unattended for all to view the consequences are self made. Don't have to agree with it but it's the law that we now have to abide by.

    Yes, quite right.
    They didn't follow the law.
I guess 'fair' isn't quite what I meant.
It does bring up the worry that a meter maid might get some problems from stroppy people who don't like having their vehicle closely scrutinised like that.
Is this even a function of meter maids now?

In Auckland, they check registration and Warrants of Fitness as well.

A timely reminder not to leave anything you wouldn't want to be stolen in your car unattended, let alone visible plenty of window shoppers out there looking for a 5 finger discount.

Yep leaving in plain sight in a vehicle is asking for trouble of some sort. And as Ranger says they also check wof and rego, and even if you have a rego but it's not displayed, you will get done for not displaying it since that is in the council bylaw.

I didn't read the first post correctly and thought you were referring to electricity meter readers and thought why on earth are they wasting time looking at/in vehicles.
Then clicked and realised it's parking meter people and someone was complaining about the repercussions of being caught having firearms unattended and visible in a vehicle somewhere that is obviously in town if there is paid parking.

Remember you are allowed to leave firearms unattended for up to 60 minutes in a vehicle under several criteria, one of them being they are out of sight.

The new changes on storing/transporting firearms allows you to leave a firearm for up to an hour I believe. But must be locked and out of sight. Really it's their own fault if they are leaving them in sight and not locked.

I think you'll find that it has nothing to do with being a "back window culture" thing, at all.
There are places that prohibit concealed carry, so they openly display - yes, it can be seen in the back window.

There were something like 11,000 firearms stolen between 2005 and 2020. You'd have to imagine more than a few would have come from people doing dumb shit like leaving them unsecured and visible in cars.

Is it fair? Yes. No sympathy. Secure your firearms.
