    Not for renewal but for new people, do not go to VTNZ for the online test and in future do not go to AA either. That really limits the options!

    How I know about this is from bitter experience.The Police letter says can't prebook for test but I decided just in case & to possibly save time I'd call VTNZ to check if needed to book in. That was yesterday and they said no need to book. Turned up today, queued 20 mins behind people getting WOFs, driver licenses, etc. Person I see then says "oh I'm not sure", 15mins on phone & then tells me all VTNZ stopped doing the FAL online tests yesterday! Then another 5 mins on phone to tell me AA do the tests. Well doh sherlock, the police letter she had in her hand said that! So I walk 20mins to nearest AA, queue 25mins behind WOF, oil changes, memberships etc before seeing a person who within 30secs checks my ID & has me sitting in front of a PC. Test done & passed :-) Then as she's printing the you've passed form she casually says I'm lucky as AA is stopping doing the FAL tests soon. All up the 10minute test took 2hrs of faffing around and in future there will be bugger all places to do it.

    The written test is going to be done at the same time as the practical tests with the instructor. Just like it used to be.

    I heard it was one of the things Mike MacIlraith changed back to save fucking people around, making them to sit two tests at different times and places.

    It only affects new applications, not renewals, so I don't really care much myself as it doesn't affect me.

    Sorry for not caring about the cops making things easier for new licence applicants.

    Not so if this info is correct

    Hi Tim --
    I’m emailing because I thought you may be interested in learning about the major shake-up the Police have just proposed for firearms administration in New Zealand.

    The Police are planning a huge shake-up to the existing system, with hundreds of arms officers and firearms licensing vettors set to lose their jobs.

    The Police are proposing:
    • All firearms activity and personnel will be managed by, and report to the Arms Act Service Delivery Group;
    • That firearms administration tasks will be moved away from districts and towards central management;
    • To establish a new national Service Centre, based in Kapiti, to manage end-to-end firearms administration; and
    • Disestablishing hundreds of field-based arms officer and firearms licensing vettors; replacing them with a far fewer number of new positions at lower pay-scales.
    I’ve received a lot of feedback from people already, and the general view is that there are huge risks in what the Police are proposing. There will be a massive loss of institutional expertise through the disestablishment of arms officers and licensing vetting officers. To make matters worse, only six weeks has been allowed for consultation which is a pitiful amount of time given the large changes proposed. This proposal has come totally out of the blue and has shocked many people.
