    Firearms licence fees

Just received an email in relation to the proposed new fees, I've copid an pasted the main text of it.

This message is to update you on the Arms Act fees review.

    *

A summary of submissions was completed and provided to Ministers in May 2023 to inform their decision making.

    *

Police has now been advised by the Minister of Police that the Government’s decision is unlikely to occur before 2024. This means there will be no changes to the licence fees for the time being.

    *

Police consulted firearms users and the public on the fee proposals from December 2022 to March 2023. For a firearms licence fee, only partial cost recovery options were presented. They were 25%, 50% and 75% of the recoverable costs.

    *

Full cost recovery was not an option.

    *

As Cabinet noted prior to consultation, when a decision is made on fees it will need to consider the benefits of greater user contribution against the risks of non-compliance, and the public interest in maintaining a well-functioning arms regulatory system.

    *

The final decision will be informed by feedback from submitters and will be in line with the requirements in the Arms Act 1983 and the Treasury guidelines for settings fees and charges in the public sector

So if Labour get back in the fee will be 75% and there will be 3 years till the next election and by that time everyone would've forgotten about the increase.
Labour are hoping firearms owners won't think about this when they are voting this year

As far as the public can see licensed firearm owners are costing the govt millions and that cost isn't being recovered.

"At the highest proposed rate, a first time applicant would have to shell out $625.50 for a five-year licence, while a 10-year renewal would cost $727.50."

Whether that cost is necessary or warranted, I don't agree.

This highlights the lack of process and lack of transparency of how the police came up with the costs they are proposing.

So a first time applicant that should undergo closer vetting costs less than a person renewing their license, they both undergo the same process, the number of years the license is issued for is irrelevant.

The applicants are paying for the service (or lack of) to vet the person to ascertain if they are fit and proper.

Most voters don't think at all anyway.
