@Sasquatch I can't find it at the moment but it's one of those old laws that they have here in the uk.
If you look at it from a purely law point of view I would say that it is the same in NZ.
You go to the police and apply for a firearms licence, this is your right. It is then up to the police to PROVE that you are fit and proper to have that licences. That's just how the law works. So long as you don't prove that your not fit and proper then it is your right to have a firearms license.
Sure you can bleat on about it being a privileged and the police can say it and write it as much as they want, but take it to court and prove that they are not supplying you with a firearms license (so long as your fit and proper) and the court then finds in your favour then it's your right.
