    Trade me has firearms database

Saw this on another thread and thought I'd better start a new thread on it.
    Thanks @Ryan

@gonetropo has already written to Mrs Bennett could one, here's his letter copy from the other thread (hope you don't mind).

It comes as a huge shock that the police have released details of firearms license holders to trademe in an effort to stop illegal firearms trading.
Not only is it a breach of my privacy but its a huge risk that names and addresses will now be held by non sworn police officers and available to a private organisation.
The best firearms security in the world in anonymity, the fact that the unlawful members of the public do not know who has firearms prevents homes being targeted for firearms burglaries.
I find the actions of the police in this case to be reprehensible and very possibly illegal.

I await your reply on this matter.

I have suspected this for sometime now.

Makes you wonder "Who else has this information"?

Guess I'll also write to the Privacy Commisioner and Paula Bennet and ask.

    Cheers

Anyone who works in a store selling firearms already has access to your details.
I would think this system will be rolled out in the future, you present your license, it's checked on line simply yes or no, its valid.
A lot of fuss about nothing, no one who works at a shop is checked.
What's more worrying is how many customers offer there full address when it is not required.

Funny how I cannot even sort my wife's eftpos card at the bank on a joint account that we both have signing rights to, "because of privacy".But the govt can give it away, whos protecting what?

How do store employees have access to my firearms details?

Well it's all in the firearms register
we fill your details in on purchase of a firearm. And when you buy any firearm on line , the police form has your address, also the courier company has your address, you post on a forum your I.P. address is available, use any hunting Facebook site ? Easy to trace someone to There home address ( found a guy who owed me money that way, even rang his home number) the days of privacy are over I am afraid.

There's a difference between privacy and anonymity.

An example; privacy is nobody seeing what you do but potentially knowing who you are where as anonymity is nobody knowing who you are but likely able to see what you are doing. If anonymity is desired one should keep actions and activity separate from identity (i.e. non-attribution to actions).

If you work in a gunshop then it is likely that you have passed your F / A License and EMPLOYERS will do checks. Because the employer will field responsibility for the security of the information then an employee that is not trusted should not be there. A book cannot be hacked but trade me can be, no matter how secure they claim to be.
