Hello again, this is my second post.
Reading the safes/ gun racks thread, along with the Police station gun theft thread got me to thinking. A friend of mine decided to make/have made, a secure walk in gun safe in his house. He had a contractor drill into the basement foundation of his house to insert reinforcement bar into it. He then used cement block over the rebars and built walls to make the walk in safe. Smaller safes can be made, ones that resemble the size of a steel safe but a lot less expensive. Numerous rebars were used vertically and horizontally as well as steel mesh cemented between the blocks. The hollow blocks were filled with concrete. A thick steel plate was used for the roof and well secured into the walls. He also added a very secure steel door. Inside are racks and a very good dehumidifier system with an alarm if the humidity gets low, very important since this is in the basement sitting on the houses's concrete slab, below ground. The same thing could be made by the average guy with easily bought materials. The roof can also be made with poured concrete with rebar and mesh. Or, simply buy a steel safe or two or three. What are your thoughts?

Nice having a walk in safe, strongroom, even a potential panic room. That way you can enjoy your gun collection without spending 20mins extricating them from their tight confinement in the safe.

I'd look at the police web site and look at the storage standards for B cat (or E cat - no longer existing license class) firearms and you'll not go wrong.

A walk in strong room is the ultimate. I know two blokes who have them. The door was the biggest problem. The way that you have described building the room with concrete blocks is a very simple good idea. There have been so many burglaries here in Canterbury lately we might all end up building strong rooms

Yes. Because anything that you dont use on a daily basis, that is worth stealing can also be secured in there to keep the low life scum from making it theirs. Fishing rods,Motorcycle parts, Power tools, (especially ones you could use to get into the room itself such as jack hammers and concrete cutters.

two layers of 18mm mdf cover sheets with reinforcing mesh in between is all that you need.
Windows and doors are a bit different. I built one for a guy once and had to look all that shit up.
BUT, get it from your arms officer first, there is a police paper with standards on it.

The rules are about slowing down or defeating the average p or syn desperate fuckwit opportunist burgler, not about stopping the gang based tosspots that specifically target a property to take firearms where they arrive prepared for getting past securing methods. Man traps should be legal. Doc should issue permits, they are after all, PESTS and we should be allowed to exterminate them.

Jeez wouldnt it be good if we could vote in or out the cops, or just the heirachy would do. They would probably then do their jobs properly

Getting back to the original topic, another couple of points to consider with a strong room, is a safe within a safe, So put you gun safe in there. then Alarm the access points. (Reed switch n the door, PIR in the room and to go one step further a reed on the safe cabinet as well.) Some alarms will text you when the alarm. One I looked at has a bell function that EVERY time the particular sensor is activated, it chirps / emails you to say the room is being accessed whether the alarm is on or not. To stop it sending the alert, you swipe a rfid card across a concealed sensor before entry. That way if you are forced to open it under duress an email is sent to someone you can rely on, to say someone is in there and that it needs attention.

Concealed game cameras are another good addition as are surveillance cameras.....call the cops and say "This cnut just stole my firearms- I have his photo - you had better find him before I do, and I WILL BE LOOKING so you had better look too...." and see if they respond .

I dont know about that. If you have taken far more than the minimum requirements and exceed what they themselves have in place they have not go ta leg to stand on. (And to be honest, it appears minimum standards EXCEEDS the security protocols that they have in place- Keys in the car with a lock box fitted and AR15s in the boot, or cupboards with wooden doors in UNATTENDED police stations......)

I may or may not have seen a safe that is home made and has a second skin on the front - the cavity between is filled with gunpowder, the back and sides/top are set into concrete

Cut into that and you may get a surprise

Graham Champion has a lovely strong room set up, you can walk around and drool at all his Oberndorf rifles.

Best door i ever saw on a block safe ( double garage ) was the big steel door from a bank safe complete with emblem. And what was within was legendary.

Nah, just post the images up on facebook or youtube with a $200 reward for whoever accurately identifies them first. Just word it in a way to avoid prejudicing any prosecution:

"This is from my indoor CCTV around the time of a burglary. The people in it may be entirely innocent passers by, but may have seen something."

You are quite right of course. We cannot presume guilt on the part of the burglar just because they were seen at the scene of a crime at about the time it happened. Besides Cahills' lot will probably say it is actually the license holders fault for having firearms- if you didnt have them they would not get stolen......
