Lock, Stock and Barrel in the South Island article

Lock, stock and barrel in the South | Otago Daily Times Online News : Otago, South Island, New Zealand & International News

In a nutshell as of May 2013:

Statistics from police showed as of May last year there were 51,834 firearms owned by endorsement licence holders in New Zealand.

Endorsement licences cover special purpose and collector's firearms and each firearm has to be registered.

Those restrictions were part of the reason firearms-related deaths were uncommon in New Zealand, University of Otago dean of law Prof Mark Henaghan said.

He conceded ''that any gun is pretty scary to me'', but New Zealand's gun controls seemed to be effective.

It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

Hooters has been taken by the famous restaurant chain so I guess it would have to be Shunters. Then again the railway workers union might object to that.

As long as the railway workers are shunting hooters in their own time, there shouldn't be too many objections.

Scared of inanimate objects he is incredibly unlikely to encounter in his day to day life? What a fucking poofter.

Always intrigues me people that have that fear of a piece of steel and wood. Have a retired friend who has never fired a firearm in his life.
He believes firearms are only made for killing people and should be banned totally, that's another argument, however it said to him, he happily drives a car everyday, now in NZ what's killing the most people and why don't they ban those as well? I trying to get him to come BP shooting with me, but so far to no avail!

In any normal year, more people are killed by knives in domestics only, than are killed by "guns"in all incident types combined, add in the random violence committed with knives all year long, mmmmmm, think we better ban knives, they kill people.

Then there is the biggest cause of stupidity, cost and misery........................... Alcohol. At least when I smoked I was donating for my health care
All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

And before anyone clobbers me for being a wally. I never had this attitude until I spent 10 days in hospital (including 4 days in A&E).
Majority of admissions and issues and injuries were directly atributable to "Beer Intake"

Stop being such a fucking nob. Some people ARE scared of seeing a firearm, it's a fact. Childish name calling them - yeah whatever floats your boat I guess.

Ok so the guy has an opinion, which he said in the next breath "but New Zealand's gun controls seemed to be effective."

Hahaha. Childish name calling...then you call him a nob

I agree with you about some peoples reaction to firearms. It may seem un rational to those that use them etc, but to some, they simply mean "killing machine".
I also strongly believe that taking into account the number of firearms in circulation in NZ, the number of firearm related incidents is very low, so something is working.
