Maximum number of guns a person can own in NSW

    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/582...i-beach-attack

    From what I understand:
    - Recreational shooters in NSW: Can own a maximum of 4 guns
    - Farmers and professional shooters in NSW: Can own a maximum of 10 guns

Interestingly, Western Australia already had limits prior to the Bondi Beach attack (5 guns and 10 guns respectively).

If NZ government imposes the same restriction, I can already envisage which 4 guns most kiwis would want to keep.
    1. a 22 LR
    2. a shotgun (eg. 12G)
    3. a small centrefire rifle. (223 being the most popular, followed by 7.62x39, 6.5 Grendel, etc)
    4. a general purpose centrefire rifle. (6.5, 270, 7mm08, 308, 30-06, etc)

Time to save money to buy a small life style block so when the time comes we can all claim ourselves as "farmers".

That's exactly what I own, although I could probably do without the small centrefire.

    So get a collectors endorsement

Also, start raiding golf ranges and limiting them to 3 clubs, protest outside bridge clubs saying you only need 6 cards to play the game, stop kids from having more than 3 lego pieces each and make politicians only have one house

I'm sure that other members can think of other suitable examples

Edit - also, why on earth is there any good reason for us to follow Australia when they do something stupid?

Shouldn't we just be holding their beer and laughing at them?

Just cos we live next to a fuckwit doesn't make us dumber

Of all the restrictions they could bring in to me this one makes the least sense of them all. There has to be such little correlation between the number of firearms owned and the mass shooting effectiveness of a given nutjob. He can only use one gun at once...

Such a convenient way to end legal firearms ownership peacemeal.

"you dont need 50 firearms" yeah maybe not. City dwellers also dont need cars. maybe remind them of the fact that more people die in car accidents...

and once a number has been introduced it can be reduced bit by bit...

The dilemma is do we let sleeping dogs lie while it's under the radar here , or lobby against it right now. Lobbying now would legitimise Pollys talking about it and raise the publics conscience of the issue and people will start taking positions. It's certainly in the mind of Gun Control NZ right now. and we don't want to give them a reason to have a voice. This Gov wont try to pull it I dont think but its highly likely if a labour coalition get in next time.
I tend towards sitting on our hands at the moment?

Restraint is the better part of dignity. Don't justify getting even. Do not do unto others as they do unto you if it will cause harm.

Or, alternatively get going and complete your submission on the Arms Bill and preemptively oppose any limits on ownership.
    1) The vetting and application process deem us fit and proper, so if the process is to be trusted then LFOs should be able to possess as many firearms as they choose.
    2) FAL owners are by definition law abiding and it is not those operating inside the law that pose a risk to society, it is those with mal intent and that is where the act should be focusing

I'm with you and would have said the same about pistol magazines but Nicole had to put foot in mouth...

I moved to OZ just after the Port Arthur shooting snd saw everything play out, and it was just the same as happened here more recently. I could see what would happen once they got all the (Legaly owned) guns on a register, and it did. Tighter rules/controls come in and they know what you've got so it's too late to do anything about it.
NZ will follow, no matter how hard some people try to stand up for their/our sport, if there's nobody supporting them we will end up going the same way.

and changing magazines is more efficient.

An aside: what’s with this wanky Aussie intended legislation to ban ‘belt fed magazines’??

As a slight tangent - I'm inclined to think that the best advocacy is trying to get more people into the sport (hunting/recreational shooting). I think what has played out in many places, that due to an increasing population shift towards larger towns and cities, people inevitably become more less connected to the practices of the bush/land, and outdoor pursuits in general. This seems particularly true of Australia, where despite the size of the place, the large majority of the population are city dwellers. It's inevitable that policy will favour the wishes and perceptions of the majority. If your only exposure to firearm use is a John Wick movie, no one is going to convince you that the general public should be allowed more access to firearms.

I think this is something practical, that hunters/shooters can actually do - invite someone for a hunt, on a range trip, or maybe gifting some fruits of hunt as a way to start a conversation. There are plenty of good arguments for responsible hunting/firearm use - mental health benefits, connection to the land, ethical harvesting of meat, pest control et.c. I think people are more likely to be convinced of this when they actually get to experience it for themselves.
