"the parties have agreed with ACT to re-write the Arms Act"
Reform programme to be led by ACT's Nicole McKee
It's even better than that.
"Immediately begin to repeal and replace Part 6 of the Arms Act 1983 relating to clubs and ranges, rewrite the Arms Act 1983 to provide greater protection of public safety and simplify regulatory requirements to improve compliance, transfer responsibility for the Arms Act 1983 to the Ministry of Justice and the Firearms Safety Authority away from Police, and review whether the Firearms Registry is improving public safety."
I can hear the kicking and screaming now.
Shock, horror. Maybe we're going to go back to the legislation that was already working before NZ Police dropped the ball and seriously f^ked up. And WE got the blame for.
A new Arms Act will, of course, be the best outcome.
Go Nicole.
Go, you good guys!
Press release from ACT earlier today

I am glad that the actors that wanted everyone to believe that bad regulation can not be amended have been proven wrong...
An easy one would be to show how much it was all going to cost.
Plus with tough times, too much of a user pays increase just wouldn't work.
Ergo save your money and put it somewhere that needs it way more.
BTW we know it doesn't improve public safety shit all.
That's just spin talk for the antis
I’m surprised about the extent of the announcement.
It takes quite a determined approach and breakthrough to shift such an obstacle.
“When everybody shares a crazy belief, no one believes it's crazy”.
Im wondering if there might be an official apology from the Police over the way law-abiding citizens have been treated ???
Nah - just stupid to even think it , eh?
Yes, great news, let's just see how it pans out and what timelines get set.
 Very promising and adult policy.
Only review registry
" review whether the Firearms Registry is improving public safety. "
It’ll come but may not go away. I think, at best, it’ll become voluntary.
Much better outcome than anticipated, and if I heard right Nicole will be the Minister for Justice.:thumbsup:
Of course then we need to wait and see exactly what gets changed & how effective the new crowd are at living up to the words. Fingers crossed
The registry has quite broad public support having been sold on the basis of "safety" **
I understand why the approach is to review whether the public are going to be any safer from gangland cross-fire with or without an expensive registry.
** also used by the public sector zealots removing parking, building raised pedestrian crossings for $500K etc.
Good news. Feeling like my votes weren't wasted for once.
Not for much longer as police are losing control of firearms completely.
Firearms policy, legislation, and regulations move to Ministry of Justice.
Administration of policy by the Firearms Authority etc. move from Police "to another department such as the Department of Internal Affairs."
The body language of the three gents announcing the new govt and policies indicated to me that they were quite proud of what they had acheived.
Well let's pretend there are thousands and thousands of unlawful semi-automatics out there, and let's pretend that's the difference between what was handed in versus the customs records of what was imported.
One might reasonably draw the conclusion that these are not going to be registered and therefore a register is going to do very little to improve public safety.
Law abiding responsible firearm owners are no threat to the safety of citizens.
I'm far too cynical to believe much will change. They have at least promised to look into it and that's absolutely bloody fantastic... but when I read the words "... and review whether the Firearms Registry is improving public safety..." I don't get warm fuzzies at all. Those who are going to be asked to justify the registry are of course going to be able to justify it beyond reproach and convince the government its absolutely necessary. The only thing that will help is if the community is proactive in communicating their feelings directly to the ministers and questioning every scrap of evidence that is presented in support of it.
The greater majority do not understand why it is not going to work and fear-mongering leads them to believe they will be safer because of it. Clearly nobody is safer but the MSM have done a great job of pushing the agenda and that means education is required to show why its not the solution. Education is going to cost money. Be prepared to front up with some money if you want positive change. I can assure you the "anti" lobby sure as hell will be.
Immediately begin to repeal etc.
Some seem to have focussed on "immediately" and ignored "begin"
Change to law is a slow process,
GPM.
What did you guys expect would happen? "registry disbanded 5 minutes after the meeting" ?
Of course they will have to come up with sound reasoning! The reason why a firearms registry is a silly idea is exactly what everyone has been saying for months/years: it costs $ and achieves nothing! But just because a few grumpy old shooters say so does not mean its true for the wider NZ public.
National have themselves said repeatedly that they would look at the cost-to benefit aspect of it. And that assessment will be very clear (if not done by ideologues, which I doubt it will).
This is a big win! and much more than we could have hoped for!
I want to see winnie in charge of how much funding the media recieves....:)
"I don't get warm fuzzies at all. Those who are going to be asked to justify the registry are of course going to be able to justify it beyond reproach"
I get that, but with Nicole McKee responsible for firearms they may not be able to be able to do so beyond "reproach".
Time will tell
It is nice to read something positive about our government and our sport/hobby.
Made me smile.
I don't believe that any other 'sports' or 'pastimes' got themselves written into a Govt Coalition agreement. We did well.
And we have one very smart lady on our side that is now in Cabinet where she can command some respect on our behalf.
And tell some people what to do.
I'm quite suprised as to how it's played out and at that stoked would be a understatement!
It feels like there is some hope for our country. That Nicole and her tireless efforts have paid off and that some good news on firearms law is a seriously well overdue welcome change to the status quo we've come to expect in the last 6 years.
I've supported Nicole from day dot but I never thought a change of the firearms laws on the day of formation of government was even possible. I'm gobsmacked in a good way.
With Nicole, Mark, David and Co I feel like we as a country will be better off.
I'm hoping that when police and police association mouthpieces spout off to the media they'll be held accountable for any lies told
My take on it all is that they will spin it out for 3 years and any changes will only take place if we all vote them in for another term.
Yeah, nah.
They're proud to have done a self serving deal which puts themselves in power.
It remains to be seen how much of the promises are delivered on and whether the delivery matches the expectation.
Remember promises are cheap to make and expensive to deliver on.
Regarding repeal of laws around clubs and ranges.
I'm involved with many clubs and three ranges.
There was some work involved in getting the ranges to the appropriate standards and inspected.
It wasn't onerous work and has improved the ranges.
All these ranges have passed their inspections.
Other ranges needed to fail to buck up the ideas of those range operating organisations.
Some ranges were/are simply dangerous and shouldn't be operating.
These ranges and their operators need to change.
