Question Practicalities of secure firearm storage when moving house between islands overnight.

Set the scene, moving house, your house is packed into a container with the moving company, though in your own vehicle are your thunder-sticks, as you cross the Strait. No issue so far.

Its a journey longer than one day, so need to rest up for the night somewhere. Now what?

What are the legalities of 'secure' firearm storage overnight when technically away from your vehicle more than an hour? Sleep in the car overnight?

Why would anyone leave firearms in a car overnight when staying in a motel or with friends?

There are too many variables in said scenario to possibly be definitive.

Finding the right place to stay would be my main thing, slightly rural Air BnB where you can take things inside overnight. Plus not visible from the road moving things.

Some other ways you could stay legal

Ask nicely if another appropriately located forum member might host your equipment for the night.

Enquire with a gun shop if they might do the same. An offer to spend some money at uplift might smooth the way.

Hire a camper van (a large number are available free or near to free as one way inter island rentals if you’re going in the right direction).

Depending on where you’re starting and ending, Bluebridge also do cabins, so if a 3hr kip is sufficient, that could be where the sleeping break is taken.

Not saying all of these is necessarily practical, but it addresses the question.

Is there something along the lines of common sense that would be acceptable? Surely every situation is different, as you are considered a "Fit and proper person" You can make a decision and what you think is the best for the situation.

Sounds like the best idea so far. Fuk its not rocket science. Advertising what your doing on a public forum isnt the brightest idea either

A lockable garage to put car in would be ideal... Now who's place can you stay at overnight??.

Having shifted houses in a previous life.... The simple and logical thing do do would've been to pad out the inside of gun cabinet with blankets etc and leave guns in there. Tied to wall, inside locked truck in,under and behind a household load of furniture....yeah they are pretty plurry secure...

I would work on the theory that firearms do not need to be secured if they are under you direct supervision.
You can sleep in a tent in the bush and have your firearm in the tent with you, unsecured.
If anyone disputes that, please explain at what point can a firearm be "unsecured" to use it?

Because there are 6 guns a whole pile of junk and it's been a long day. Probably happens all the time. Pretty risky but at least if the car gets stolen the police will make an effort in looking for it haha

Best security is others ignorance. When I moved province, I subsequently notified a change of address and got asked what my secure moving plan was. Told them I was already done and dusted. I got a severe frown which I ignored.

Fuck me sideways, a "secure moving plan"??

Every day we must fight the encroaching tide of ignorant fuckwits who think up more and more reasons why they want to stick their nasty little beaks into our business

I moved about 2 years ago and plod were allowed in to check my security in the new place
Any proposal of moving plans and other such bollocks would have been met with a solid rebuttal that the firearms were under direct supervision at all times and would they care to go investigate some actual crime?

One suspects that the last few decades of Health & Safety numptiness has kept a disproportianate amount of fuckwits alive who have "grown up"* to become what the English refer to as Jobsworths who exist only to delay, retard and generally gum up the machinery of the economy and annoy those of us who are actually doing things

    *the term is used advisedly

Totally agree with you. But fear things will get worse. Most of these "compliance" fuckwits used to be gainfully employed as accounts clerks, office mail boys etc. AI is now taking more office jobs so we'll have a hoard of tie wearing useless cunts looking for an earn. What to do????
