Mine expires November, sent the reapplication end of Feburary. I had an automatic reply saying received, nothing since. Still have 6 months, here’s hoping.

Mine expires next week. my renewal application went in early Jan. My firearms, parts and ammo all all went on a holiday to a mates place yesterday. (his FAL is valid for another 3 years - I sighted it when handing them over.) My safe is more secure than his cabinet, but in the spirit of making NZ safer, I comply with the law to the letter.![]()
There is no requirement to tell the police who has the firearms, as long as the person who holds them has a current licence. In fact, if I gave them away, I just need to sight the recipients licence - not keep a record of who I gave them to. As far as I am aware, that is all that the law requires.
Mate in CHCH took 8 months to get his license renewed. He received a letter about 6-8 weeks ago saying it had been approved. He is still waiting for license to arrive.
Son is going through this right now, will ask how its going when we next speak later tonight.
@mikee - Hadn't thought about that. Will check with insurance tomorrow.
@CandiedGold the but about a cop is interesting.
Surely knowing a copper and having one for a reference would be a good thing. Theoretically they should be the best referee of them all. Quasi vetted already
@CandiedGold, initial licence is for 5 years and renewal thereafter is for 10 years.
Thanks for the clarification @10-Ring
Curious if anyone else got this reply from IPCA weasels
I’m writing to let you know the outcome of your complaint about the delay in your firearms licence
renewal application being processed.
Police acknowledge that there are serious delays in processing applications relating to firearms
licences.
The Authority is aware of this issue and has spoken to Police about this. Police tell us that they have a new business model which it is hoped will reduce the backlog of applications and delays for applicants.
This includes a historic files team which visits each district, more permanentstaff and fewer staff being seconded or re-deployed to other roles.
In respect of your application, Police records confirm that they received your application on 5 March
2022 and it was assigned to staff on 15 March 2022.
I acknowledge that a delay of 2 months is frustrating for you, however, we also recognise that Police
are dealing with a significant backlog of applications and have limited resources.
Because the Authority is satisfied that Police have taken action to reduce delays and your application appears to be progressing, we will take no further action.
Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention. Your file is now closed.
I reapplied for mine last year in April.
Mine had expired in 2017 whilst I was living overseas, I paid the extra fee supplied all the details, references and wife and safe got vetted by arms officer and had new license issued after about 2.5 to 3 months from applying, in Rural NZ so probably a bit quicker than if I had been city based or I was just lucky.
My new FAL is valid for 5 years, my old one was 10.
Cheers FBD
