Monitoring and dialing to your phone are Phphhhhh. They all are "after the event" systems. You could be 2 hrs from home when the thing goes off, and if you bought cheap its most likely a false alarm. Do you really want to phone a friend and ask them to go see whats happening?

CCTV recorded to a hard drive, might give you ID of the doers, if they havent taken steps to hide their ID. Cameras external and internal. With low light / night vision.
Beam detection outside can give a pre warning. Glass break sensors can give a pre warning inside the dwelling.

A very stout safe and lots of noise is my best advice. It all depends what you need to protect.

I have been in the industry as well.
