place a chamber flag in a rifle that is hanging outside hut door while owner is inside....those loopy trampers who arrive have possibly seen utube mentioned...and will feel a little safer
like it or not,in a hut on a major walking track you are in a public space/place so you NEED to be seen to be doing it right...hells bells 30 years ago staying at pinnacles hut on mt somers I would remove bolt BEFORE getting to hut and leave it in bumbag while at hut, rifle would hang on porch, clearly visibly non usable..and the trampers were great, they even gave green light for peski porch shitting hut possum to meet timely demise one night.
its all about being proactive in being seen to be safe
spoke to a fella recently who has found himself offsides with law by shooting a deer close to a tramping track/hut..... like it or not the wild open spaces are getting encroached upon.

This is why Kiwis are God's children - you just could not leave anything of value, let alone a firearm, hanging outside a hut or unattended in a hut while you went off somewhere else. It simply would not be there when you got back. Either that or a tramping Karen would have called in a SWAT team at the mere sight of a gun.

Good, sensible safety practices are about one thing and one thing only. The “KISS” principle. The more layers you have, the more complex and onerous it becomes. Mistakes will happen. We have perfectly serviceable rules and you all know them so don’t quote me range practices, they are a closed, controlled environment with their own set of problems right now and it comes across as a strawman argument.

Yes, I’m incredibly cynical about this, but deservedly so. I grew up in small towns, the local copper’s were a big part of our community, friends and family were coppers, and it saddens me when I see that relationship destroyed over ideology. I so wish to continue to support community style policing but currently, I don’t see much light at the end of the tunnel. It’ll take some serious commitment to clean out that rats nest and for those of you optimistic types, here’s hoping that one day they’ll have the guts to come to us and say sorry, and we truly want to work together for a better outcome for all.

Ok, I’m done. Peace to you all.
    Cheers, Sidetrack

What a load of bollocks , what did the local cop do apart from waving his dcik around for a few to see and to impress his bosses . If he "truly" believed in what he was doing , would he not point out to the hut owners ( DOC and Trusts) of the need to provide for the proper storage facilities in the first instant .
And as for the "Privilege " , really grow up and stand on your two feet and stop begging Mummy for a bag of lollies . It does not even pass the sniff test!.

Last year was the first time I have been to a hut with a gun rack, but no way would my rifle fit in the slots. SAV 99 with stock pack and 2.5x10x45 scope.
Other wise when in huts with trampers i tend to just put my rifle on my bunk against the wall and cover it with my sleeping bag. No point in drawing attention to yourself, they all knew we were hunters.

Lots of ex FS huts used to have racks (Caples etc) but when DOC took over and encouraged trampers to use them the gun racks got taken out - the start of Wokeness??

As above, don’t do it unless you really need to,but the following may help. Read Browning instructions first.
Then “Remove the lever assembly as a whole, insert go guage or fully sized case into the chamber, insert the bolt and push it fully home, the head will rotate into the locked position, install the lever group in the locked position.
If your headspace is out it was always out because the lugs to chamber set your headspace, not the gears, they set your timing where a full tooth on the gears goes from unable to close, to unable to rotate and lock the bolt head.”

I think what we can all take from this is that we have new regulations and the authorities are going to expect us to take them more seriously than has been traditional in this country.

Like it or not we are going to have to create new behaviours, or not, at our own risk.

I would suggest that car parks at public boat ramps etc will also get checked for compliance come duckshooting opening morning.

a few times over last 10 years the local copper has been out with F&G ...ranger does licence check and copper sees who is pissed in charge of firearm....was well beyond time it was cleaned up,too many were behaving like dickheads
it is one of those logistical things for us...first fella to arrive on island stays put and all gear gets ferried across,at no time is gear left unattended from start to finish,2-3 boat loads its just plain good management to never leave stuff unattended for any longerthan necessary,I may leave a drum of decoys for 15 minutes but wouldnt dream of leaving shottie without someone watching it.
