Tikka T3 going off by itsself

Had a shooter at the range at the weekend with a T3. They were shooting a match and when the shooter closed the bolt it went off. I was watching the shooter, and their hand was nowhere near the trigger.

Anyone got any idea what might cause that? It happened only once during the 50 round match.

Not sure about cause but a friend of mine had the exact same thing happen with a T3 when hunting. The deer were polite enough to stick around for some follow up shots.

Pretty un-nerving though. Like you said its only happened once. Keen to hear if anyone has ideas. Got to be the trigger slipping and letting go of the firing pin for some reason.

Trigger adjusted too light and the preload spring isn’t giving enough sear engagement

Or there’s debris in the trigger, - your wanting at lest 16 thou sear engagement at a minimum

Mates one did this. It was the bolt holding the trigger group to the action being slightly loose.

As above, trigger retaining screw can loosen on the T3's. It's worth applying a bit of medium strength threadlocker (loctite 243 or similar) to this screw.

Yep torque those trigger mounting screws TIGHT. Almost all tikka trigger failures circle back to sticky fingers fiddling.

Thanks for the ideas people, I will pass that info onto the gun owner. I did consider the possibility of the trigger having grit it in, but i will get the owner to check the tightness of the action screws before the gun is stripped.

Its the screw that holds the trigger assy to the action not the action screws

I had the trigger weight adjustment screw work loose on a rifle and the trigger would drop with a light tap to the stock.

Yep I'm picking that's the problem as seen it myself.
Dab of locktite as your adjusting as they have used that at the factory.
    The blue one preferably

The std tikka trigger weight adjustment screw hits the mounting screw in front of it before it gets too low. However if other parts of the trigger have been "adjusted or modified" all bets are off!
