Yes fair points and naturally I am deeply concerned that the register may be set up so that it excludes some people from "coming in from the cold" as it were - is there a sarcasm typeface available?

But yeah I haven't been inspected for feckin ages and I should have been (B cat, C cat)

Like others here I am keeping my head down and only buying ammo for the coming period until the election and will see how that rolls out

Is anyone taking bets on how long it will be until the first burglary of an address can be traced back to unauthorised access to the registry?
I put it at about 6 months

SAP, used a mutant version of it for a few decades, otherwise known as Stop All Production. Lately updates have been problematic.

told this before...I was at MSC weekend in Cromwell about 27 years ago and one of the old hats was telling us about incident overseas...pretty sure it was a border in or on edge of the states and pretty sure it was Bob Badlands doing the telling..the guard took details and wandered back into booth..then came out again and asked how our man liked using his revolver..think it was a 357 of some description.... our man was taken aback then realised guard had said same strapped to his belt... .seems the system has been accessible since ...well...forever.

The register looks to be hosted in AWS, and uses AWS certificates and I'm assuming AWS security controls. Looking at Objective Corp they have partnerships with Microsoft and AWS - but I don't see anything about security vendor partnerships (and no I do not count Microsoft as a security vendor). So from a risk point of view, if Objective Corporate built the entire system for Police then they have a very strong skillset in software development for government, and good assurance built around that software - but I would be concerned about the hosting infrastructure security. Going by their other products it's probably built using mostly AWS tools and linux images (and having a little poke at it). Having a quick scan of their docs/certs fort their other it's likely they fall a little short on some NZISM requirements - but that's pure guesswork (though educated guesses).

Short version, it looks like it's built well but probably has some soft gaps.

At least the Dealer side of it is pretty quick and painless. Most of the info auto fills for you. Takes a couple mins at most and done and dusted. Haven't looked at it on the personal side just yet.

Objective RegWorks, had been selected to develop the register, which will require gun owners to enter their name, date of birth, address and other details.

“The Arms Information System (AIS) will be a secure digital platform that will manage the information related to arms (firearms, parts, ammunition, and other restricted weapons), firearms licensing, and any activities associated with the possession and use of firearms,” it said in a statement on its website.

It follows changes to firearms legislation in June 2020, making way for the register, and a pre-budget announcement by Police Minister Poto Williams that included $208m to establish a new Firearms Business Unit within police to oversee the register.

now even with my dodgy old eyes I can spot a couple of glaring errors in the above bit from your article 308

Another bit that rankles is calling it a business unit.
It will be a government department whose sole purpose to administer the registry and firearms licenses.
I'm sure going forward they will try to absolutely pillage us for fees.
    It is not a business.
That would make it a SOE and if it's anything like Solid Energy that will be a bigger debacle than I could imagine

I have to do my Dealer bit soon, I only got my Real Me account "Verified" last week so be a week or so before that comes back. Did you have to be Verified or just the basic real me account

    Cheers

Well I put my guns into the system.
Took some time but was not too bad as I put the laptop beside the safe.
Had a call to clarify the capacity of my shotgun within 30 mins of sending it which was a surprise as it’s Sunday.
Option selected was 6 shot as it holds 5 plus one.
Guy on the phone said, are you sure it holds six and not 5 plus one? (Six shot means it’s restricted in there view).
I responded that 5 plus one equals six.
Anyway apparently they will correct the shotgun capacity options to tube capacity plus one so it aligns with their understanding.

Another issue is Ruger American Ranch rifle is not an option.
    Only Ruger American.
Asked that they add this option.
Bit surprised as there are heaps of these floating around.

I can see many will have issues selecting the correct version of their firearm, this may cause issues when the firearm is moved on and then it’s recorded as something different.
Eg Ruger 10/22, there are so many versions, plus the version can be changed with minimal changes such as changing the stock.
