I'm not sure the justification of 'the Police want it' really validates the expenditure of that much public money - very hard to see where the cost benefit ratio figures to fully support the introduction and upkeep of the system will come from. If it's truly secure, functional without errors and the cost to the people forced to contribute their details is minimal then it (apart from hassle factor) won't cause any issues even if it does no benefit longterm. On the other hand, if it increase risk of diversion, consumes a huge amount of resources that could be better utilised elsewhere and doesn't reduce the amount of firearms being held unlawfully what is the actual point?
