This might sound harsh, and it isn't intended to be.
But it clearly states in the Firearms Code book what are the Minimum requirements are, and a fridge freezer is not.
My argument was that if 4mm wire was good enough to secure a rifle then anything could be better. But rules are rules and we must follow them to ensure it doesn't become harder to own firearm's.

Nice to see they put some time and effort into the response. I reckon you could make comply, but whether its worth the time and effort is another story. Probably easier to start from scratch with a sheet of 18mm ply/mdf and some 30x3 steel angle...

actually maybe that's the answer - build a 4-side "box" to go around the front, and re-mount the door with some more substantial hinges.... hard to explain, easier to draw maybe...

Apart from a cost issue I just don't understand why you would use that shit box. Not a good dry environment for guns and more likely to get stolen. Guns and the law deserve more respect.

Restraint is the better part of dignity. Don't justify getting even. Do not do unto others as they do unto you if it will cause harm.

    "Shitbox"... the indignity!
How can you dishonour the great NZ Chest Freezer?
It's an affront to the quality Kelvinator brand and the well-respected Fisher and Paykel name.

Actually, I was purely motivated to consider this as a possible safe because it was offered free... so my frugality (aka Scottish blood) got the better of me.

I'm sure there are other firearm owners who, after looking at the $1000+ price of a 3mm 20 capacity gun safe, take a sideways glance at the wife's 20-year-old chest freezer... but guys, it looks like the good old Freezer can stay in the wife's hands.

Perhaps one of the reasons this would work so well protecting your beloved firearms is because no thief in their right mind would even consider the possibility that it might contain anything of value, let alone firearms.

You mention a 3mm 20-gun capacity gun safe. If that's an indication, then what would the value of your firearms and added bits and pieces come to? Far more that a $1000 gun safe I would assume. Having had guns stolen in a burglary a few years back I can say it`s not a nice feeling and if $1000 brings peace of mind then well worth it. Besides you need somewhere to store the wife's 20 carat diamond ring.

For last twenty years I've used an old cabinet dryer.... But decided it was time to get a proper, made for purpose safe. The old one MIGHT we'll have passed another inspection but it can live in garage as secure storage for power tools instead...

I have one of these. But I don't use it as a gun safe. There is nothing specific about the key. There is a set number of keys for that line of "safe". So if you know what number your lock is, contact Chubb and order another key. But the hard bit is getting a response from Chubb regarding a key. Their customer service is shocking.
These are a for fire proof document storage, not valuables.
I was also told when I bought mine that if you know exactly where to drill a hole, they can be opened with a screwdriver.
