Thread: 410 Repeater

Just now we are having a lot of fun dealing to feral pigeons for a bunch of local farmers.

The only shottie I have (read like have used as well) is a cut down Russian single shot, dangerous at both ends and very noisy. A mate has a single shot 410, and its way quieter for the shooting we're doing in fairly built up areas (the Plods have been out to see us a couple of times).

Anyhoo I was thinking that when funds permit I might look for a repeater 410 - I don't care too much if its a Pump, Auto or other, but I'd kinda like more than 2 shots. Thoughts on a good cheap gun?? Makes and models?? Chokes??

Mossberg make a 410 pump, they look the business.

Mossberg make a .410 pump. Just read a UK article, they mention one with a hushpower moderator. Might be a bit more discrete.

Saiga make a .410 semi auto that looks like an draganov, probably a bit heavy tho. Guncity has them

I have a Remington 870 pump 410 I got for the missus to shoot years ago. From memory there was a PITA issue with a factory sleeve in the mag tube moving but a small tig weld fixed that. Cracking little gun. I like shooting it if the ammo wasn't so bloody dear. Most are full choke. It doesn't hurt as there aint a lot of pellets in there.

little trick for you mate ring star 555 tell police coms where and when you,l be shooting and what.
then when the jobs are called in the coms tell them its ok.

theres a few mossberg pumps around but id prefers a remington 870.
ive got bids and watches on 2 more 870 20 gauges on tardme so i can corner the market

I've never had much to do with shotties (where I grew up duckshooting/clays just weren't popular) so I am on a "late in life learning curve". (OK I'm a confirmed gun nut so likely certifiable nuts).

I'm sort of swinging between .410, 28 and 20 gauge (besides the pigeons I have in mind a grandson who I hope to get shooting in a few years) but something I read has sort of distracted me from the pump/semi thing . . .

A shotgun writer of some note (well he made out like he was important anyway - a Pom of the driven shoot class of folk) pointed out that with a double barrel you have an instant choice of chokes, and that in a sub gauge this was a significant advantage as it extended your range quite a bit over a single barrel with only one choice of choke (at the time of firing). That makes quite a bit of sense to me, the likes of the Miroku mentioned by @GDMP is interesting . . .

If you are with a 410 I don't know if there would be much benefit of a choice of chokes. There aint a lot of pellets in there so unless its really close and you need a really open choke sometimes, full would be the way to go I reckon. Once you get more pellets in there as in a 28/ 20g fair enough-you can play with different pellet sizes to fill out a pattern from a more open choke for the closer ones.
Example-for clays with a double barrel you could have say 1/2 choke (old school here) with a full choke for the further away ones/misses and use size 7 shot.
For skeet where the distance is closer and everything moves a bit quicker, you would use skeet chokes (really open) and smaller size 9 pellets to fill the pattern up.
In the field for ducks/game the usual first barrel is the more open choke with the second barrel being tighter for the ones getting away.
Or as you have mentioned you spot one already at the distance and switch the selector/trigger to fire the full choke first.
In practice I have used pumps and semis for years and I don't feel disadvantaged very much at all although I should one day get a proper shottie for clays and retire the old A5 before it falls to bits.
I used to do things on sporting clays like 7's in the open barrel for a close target with 9's in the full choke to keep the pattern full-depending on the clays for that station.
I reckon though I was just being a bit of a wanker and over thinking it.
Like I said you can get carried away if you aren't careful.

my .02, I suggest you buy an Under/Over 12g and get some 410,28 or 20ga inserts for it if you want your young fella to learn with it (personally i would just use light 12g loads)
Autos have their place but I don't like having to pick up my empties whilst everyone else buggers off to the next stand or such.
Lighter guages are good but often dad give his son a light 20ga (cause its easier to use / lighter weight) then buys the heaviest loads he can to compensate for being a 20ga and the think boots more than a 12 as its much lighter. This can have all sorts of negative effects on your lad / ladess'es shooting
Also no messing round unloading when crossing fences, meeting other hunters etc, just open the action (if its not already ) and you are safe and everyone can see that.
Not sure about the whole instant choice of 2 different chokes as I generally have 2 the same in,

12ga ammo is generally cheaper and more available as well. If you shoot clays then generally gun clubs can sell you ammo cheaper than your local H&F

A Weatherby SA-08 in 20ga with a 24" barrel has been ordered (its the same as the ATA CY but they aren't offered here with the 24" so I have to pay for a name, but at least its not "Beretta").
