what was the question Horihunter
About how a dog that ran hard in a way that suited the style the gunner hunted and how that might relate to judging criteria
It wasn't a question it was a random statement
I asked him what it had to do with the thread, he could have just explained what he was trying to get across but he decided to get butt hurt and delete and PM.
I didn't call him a moron or make fun of his dog I asked how it related. Good lord don't be so sensitive.
The opening line started with what do you get with...and ended with a question mark....
Being sensitive isnt a forte of mine..
having read Tussocks post id agree with RCGSP ,its not about trialing or thoughts there of . Had he demonstrated his dogs ability relating it to retriever trials it would have been OK. To just crash a post and talk of irrelevant stuff is rude, not that i think Tussock had that intention
Can I have some of what you fellas are smoking?
Im going to get a 300$ bottle of whiskey for when i catch you up this season Ruff
Mind mate me and more than a few nips is pretty much done -cant do the booze like I use to -shit it just hurts like hell the next WEEK
There's a P&S trial in the Porters Pass area on the 23rd of Feb. In fact it's two down the line trials run back to back.
There's a handful of GWP's (couple of younguns and a FTch), couple of Wiems and Britanny's running.
It's the easiest way to see what it's all about.
get to it Wirehunt its good fun and great bunch of people
Easy fix, I'll take care of what you don;t :bouaaaaah:
Seriously guys, I see the relevance in Tussock's post...
It's about time people just relaxed a bit around here... Seriously, people ask for advice, and get really shitty when it's pointed out what really does and does not work... arguments start when their questions are answered.... I think part of the issue is this... not with the forum, the entire dog world.... many people involved deeply in trials believe the trial results the only benchmark, so it stands to reasons a person who spent the weekend winning against four other dogs might rock up to the forum pon Sunday night thinking they have conquered the world and have all the answers... I loove trials but the hunting dog world is far bigger and there's many more benchmarks many people put more store in... I really believe the main issue on all dog forums is the trials folks thinking anyone who doesn't do what they do has achieved anything... I think they are, in many cases, hiding in an unrealistic corner of the dog world.... there's a lot more and more higher disciplines... Field trial results only mean you have beaten some dogs... tell us what they were and the results will have more merit.
I've been around long enough to remember live game pointer trials where Leon ran, Bob Ran, Noel ran, Robyn ran, John Ran, and more, many more... now , almost no -ne runs but the claims are bigger than any of those gurus made... come back to earth and just talk gundogs in the field guys... I love trials, but seriously, 99% of folks here know what they are about and couldn;t give a flying fudge sundae... there's a lot more to hunting dogs than just trials.
trials are the only bench mark where a group can come together on mass and show their wears unless you can suggest another platform dogs can show off their skills next to another to be considered .its easy to sell snake oil if your its not being tested !!!!!!
Personally I think all should look to the game trials as the bench mark and attend a few to understand what work level their dog may be able to perform to with a bit of good advice .There are no negatives in taking your dog to a trial
Try this... Trials can only be the best benchmark when the majority of breeding stock is participating.... while only a fraction is, they are virtually worthless for their intended purpose.
Absolutely Ruff , it couldn't be any better to watch a dog over a day rather than fpr 10 minutes but on mass we dont have that luxurey and my point is the trial arena is the best platform for all to see many perform on mass .There are better platforms just not for 20 people at once
personally I would love a day like that -I cannot really speak for others Ruff but I am always willing to put my boy forward for glory or failure on the day and that is why I would never conclude a decision on a dog by one win .
I would like to hear you thoughts on good mating choices -not a trick question just I would like to build some knowledge
Black lab cross German short haired pointer
Toby many of us think about the healthy population of pure breed dogs , to breed a mix breed ultimately makes life harder for all in the long run even if you get yourself a dog you like it has little use for others --its the big picture alot here to think about also .I am bringing a English Setter bitch in because there are not enough breeding here because I want to be able to have choices for me and others in the near future
So get some labs and german short haired pointers, cross them once then use next breed them with their own breed and so on, would that work?
Righto. So how would you do it to keep the pure labs and German short haired pointers but still get the crosses? is there no way?
For those interested, the trials are being run on private land. All spectators are welcome.
Please assemble at the Springfield Hotel at 9am 23 Feb, and bring a current sheep measels Dosing Cert for all dogs with you.
This is required at the land owners request.
We will all be travelling in convoy to the trial grounds and access is via a locked gate.
NO LIVE AMMUNITION PERMITTED - again at the land owners request.
See Ya All there:)
good to see your post smallfry
Thanks El B.
Interesting to read comments about P&S NG Trials - pity they are not run down South here - the NZGTA go a bit deaf on any suggestions to help the P&S
class advance and develop down here - so we can only do pigeon trials anyway.
no chance on running a natural game trial on quail down your way --I hear the quail are good but then if you have local knowledge everything is easier
Biggest problem is Rabbits.
Its been tried once or twice in the past and was a disaster.
yes UK Moor dogs!
This is my current mindset. Who knows, it may change after few years and dogs under the belt.
Out of curiosity, I thought the negative scoring system and minimum points requirement (in the case of P&S) was there to ensure a 'standard' even if a field was small?
I'm interested in this discussion because I am interested in how a breed such as the GWP, which has a small gene pool in NZ and no true 'versatile' testing system in place is supposed to test it wares? For example, if someone was promoting their Wire as having a bit of chop, but there are no Versatile tests, pigeons tests are a waste of time and live game trials really thin on the ground then what's left? I guess we should also take into account the small group of people running dogs... particularly in the mainland.
Of course this is irrelevant to someone who doesn't care about working pedigree or betterment of their chosen breed over time.
I agree with EB that there is no harm in trialing a dog. I also agree with Ruff that pigeon trialing shouldn't really be the end game... to be honest I haven't met anyone yet that holds that mindset, but that's not to say they aren't out there.
Ask the NZGTA. The original concepts back in the 1930's were based upon UK trials.
The P&S class has remained the same until NG trials in the North were introduced.
A thorough review of how we do our trials in NZ is badly needed.
Some of the P&S NG trials are based upon "wild" pheasants pre released in reserves.
How often are no results posted thru lack of game?
Some areas down South have miniscule pheasant seasons that make holding NG trials impractical.
Meantime, those forced to do pigeon trials cos of no other option bear the brunt of criticism.
At the end of the day we have to use the only tools available to us and if its planted game then it is going to be that .What we need to appreciate also is the dogs we train for trialing we are training for work in the field providing your a hunter of course -there are no negatives here for me -a good bunch of people who enjoy dogs and a bit of friendly rivalry .
Has anyone explored large blocks for quail -if there are rabbits one can rabbit proof a dog with a bit of work ......I think lol
Just remember -
Trials are like masturbation - It's fun, but it's not the real thing
practice makes perfect
