I took my dog [Smithfield/lab x] on many a roar trip and found him to be excellent at keeping cool under stress when trying to move in on a stag that was in full noise. Could pick the difference between human and deer roars. Not sure what you call a long trip but I have spent up to three weeks with him on fly in's. Great at tracking wounded animals, back track to camp at any time we chose, kept campsite clear of food scraps, cleaned my plate, kept feet from freezing in sleeping bag, and never once narked to my mates on where we had been and what fuck ups I had made.
