I took my dog [Smithfield/lab x] on many a roar trip and found him to be excellent at keeping cool under stress when trying to move in on a stag that was in full noise. Could pick the difference between human and deer roars. Not sure what you call a long trip but I have spent up to three weeks with him on fly in's. Great at tracking wounded animals, back track to camp at any time we chose, kept campsite clear of food scraps, cleaned my plate, kept feet from freezing in sleeping bag, and never once narked to my mates on where we had been and what fuck ups I had made.
Just take the bloody thing. If you don't why did you even get it?
Always took my pooch.
As he was due to retire he was going deaf, he started roaring back at the stags. :)
The cook has just approved a new pooch coming to the coast to join the family from up Hawkes Bay way, all going well.
Can't wait to meet him:)

Never leave mine at home, unless dogs aren't allowed. They only get better with experience and they don't get experience in a kennel
Never leave home without her.
heres a clip from last roar (some may have seen it already)

You mite be amassed,
I thort i was haven trouble with my dog chasing deer when they spooked.
Turns out he was turning them like a heading dog was meant to do.
He has a good nack for it now. even turned me into a lazy prick:thumbsup:
Going to take the dog , not having luxury of a helicopter I'm packing in for 5 days , what's the lightest ,highest energy dry dog food ? Ekanuba ? . Hopefully he's gnawing on stagasuras hocks , ! But just incase
Get one of the ruffwear dog packs Canine Spirit : Approach Pack and get the dog to carry his own food (and a few beers for you)
Give the dog a big feed at road end and then share your food with dog...watching your dog eat half your rations will improve your hunting ten fold...dog can easily go 5 days without a major meal...a hungry hunter will hunt all day...a well fed one will hunt for a couple of hours morning and afternoon...be nothing worse than running out of your own food and having to share dog biscuits.
I give mine a huge feed by the truck before we set off. Then he probably eats a third of what he normally does during the trip until we pot something big. Worst comes to worst is I take some rabbit snares for the night depending where I go. If pooch is getting something, even if it's minimal he'll be fine for a few days. I find water to be the biggest issue, especially up high in summer. Those doggie back packs seem popular with guys I hunt with and are great for dog carrying a couple litres of tap juice in.

With people out shooting at brown animal shapes does anyone blaze up their pooch?
Oh well, I have always had lab x's and they can put away a decent feed..."walking in" on a five day hunt is hardly exercising your dog...if you are hunting in an area that there is the possibility of 1080'd possum bodies then you would be a fool not to muzzle your dog and who the hell hunts in areas that have been 1080'd anyway?...And I did say one could share your own food with the mutt.
I'm with you kawhia on the exercise after eating . I personally know two continental that are toes up because of that . ,especially with deep chested dogs , which he is . I will take as much food as I can practically carry . He doesn't hold condition as a rule so will put him on two and three feeds a day
What sort of food Munsey?
No way Ill be taking the great dane lab cross then, he would eat more than me !
I would say the annoying camp possum for food on the go. Haha:P
Go see your local butcher and try get some good fatty trim. By far and away the best thing for lean dogs.
I used to get big fatty strips of mutton and whack them in the dehydrator. you can take a heap and they weigh f all.
Snacked on a few myself when the supplies were getting low.
Brisket bones work as well
I have heard of people just using a box with a lightbulb - http://www.pennilessparenting.com/20...ade-dehydrator.
depends if you are going to use it or not really. I make my own fruit rollups and meat jerky and wouldnt be without one. 10kg of meat makes 3 kilo of jerky ,same nutrition and amount of meat, more taste but it weighs less.Saves a fortunes on buying the same crap from the shops all dripping in sugar and preservatives. The dog loved the stuff almost as much as I do.
oven on dead low with door open a crack and blower on does the same thing but slower.
I use an old clothesdryer, disconnected the belt so it wouldn't spin but still dried stuff, plenty of stuffed ones around for free.An old wire rack inside and your away..
stuff buying one for a few hundy :x_x:
All you are doing is reducing the moisture content really so the bacteria wont rot it.
You can buy a simple cloth type rack, hang the meat in that and a day or two later your done.
Yep Emma always wears hivis has done from a pup its like her on switch when she gets it put on shes in hunting modeAttachment 22606
That is a bloody good idea.
I took Tux high energy for the Bok last trip which was his first and being a Vizsla he always looks underfed to me.
He gorged on the front end of deer after it was boned out, but man the farts were unreal.
It was his first deer shot over him so I spoiled him with meat, next trip which is in June he is only getting heart and bones.
I never thought of it as I like the black ones but I guess it is a risk in fallow country.

Sweeps starting to look a wee bit old there mate
got a few good years left in him.... his nose is fine.
I used to take that freeze dried K9 food on trips for my GWP... that is until they about doubled the price and it was hardly cheap before.
For the last trip I took her away on I made up a mix of some minced up tahr offcuts, rice and pasta all cooked up and then thrown in the dehydrater. Nice and light and she seemed to do alright on it (obviously needs rehydrating). Looking at getting her a pack from realdog.co.nz , 5-7 kg out of my pack will be well worth the money!
Awesome video thanks for sharing
