I regularly look after a Huntaway/Black Lab cross. He would easily be the most trainable dog I have ever seen. He is nearly four now, but can learn a new trick in less than an hour and remember it a week later. Very obedient, seems to understand cats in such a way that cats are somehow not intimidated by him. Can win over children that are scared of dogs, and loves hunting, esp rabbits.
We’re on our second Lab/Huntaway cross, highly recommend.
Best traits from both breeds. Both dogs have interestingly been more or less mute as well.
That’s how I read it too, as a cross breed the combination seems to work well. The one we look after was fairly vocal, but I was able to train him to stop barking with a hand signal. He soon got the idea that quiet = good, and now days the barking is usually triggered by very specific situations.
On tramping trips with more than a handful of people, if the group spreads out, he tries to get everyone ‘back in formation’. Other gatherings that involve any sort of splinter group movement also triggers the working dog.
The night that I shot a possum marooned in a tree from flooding seemed like his best day though. When he got his mouth around the carcass and started swimming, there was a visible shock of sudden realisation. I felt like I actually saw him find his calling in life.
$200 now.

Heres a few photos of the one I look after. For anyone wondering what the pups might look like when grown.

My old mate JJwas like this .probably same bloodlines although i used to tell the inquisitve hes by"Roamin catholic x opportunity with a touch of d10 caterpillar dozer thrown in! that caused much intrigue and headshaking as people walked away!
I picked him up as a giveaway -family moving chch to auckland and he couldnt go .hed lived with 4cats who bullied him ,ours werent much better using him as a step from floor to couch.
intro to duckshooting /shotgun fired a shot he looks round "show us ya party piece" ,and promptly returned to dozing in the sun. never really trained himas a gundog although GSPFhad tow cracxkers(alas both gone too red GSP and elvis goosedog extraordinaire GSPxrotweiller).however i ues to take him out and hacve some wonderful photos of him GSPFand my boat laden with grain feeding out! old JJ enjoyed thoese outings .
