If I had not just seen it

with my own eyes, I would not believe it.

We popped out for our usual bunny seeking mission this evening, but no customers were out in the open. hell hound does her usual trick of going after one in the thick scrub, despite her lack of success. I left her to it for ten mins or so, then called her back. No response!
`I know ` says me (to me), fire the 22, she cant resist finding the victim. The dog at this point, is about 80 to 100 meters away and very much out of sight.
I lined up on a little wooden figure I have at the end of the drive ( its a Penguin )....Bang!!!!
Dog appears from nowhere at 200 kph. I tell her to `find` and she goes to it. And I mean STRAIGHT to it. She then sits next to the wooden Penguin, sniffing the fresh bullet hole and looking at me as if to say ` yeah, its dead`.

I don't know how the hell the dog knew what I shot, but I am impressed.

Many, many moons ago I had part ownership of a very small Sidney Silky, you know a miniature Pommy lap dog.

When shooting targets you could cover her ears & eyes whilst pointing her in another direction, upon the shot she would break free & run directly down the line of the shot, even tried to trick her by shooting into random fence posts, same result, never figured out how a tiny townie lap dog could figure it out....

She was a third the size of a possum so wasn't much of a hunting dog, as keen as she was

My dogs learnt to find those soft air pellets when they are fired outside . They are tiny and he brings them back somehow , always cracks me up . I wonder if it's your scent on the bullet/hole or you dogs just smart @Pengy . My dogs not the latter

I really don't know @Munsey. Wouldnt think much of my scent would be left after firing
I recall a long serving police dog handler trying to explain that the dogs were not always following `scent` as such, but following where the latest disturbance to a surface had taken place. Didn't make much sense at the time, but.....

My last dog would be let out in the morning to fetch the chch press. We had a long drive of around 60m. He would muck around sniffing and pissing sometimes for half an hour.
When he finished mucking around he always came back with the paper.
Thought that took a few brains but he would always make up for it in stupid, some other way😆

Yes the Sidney Silky was developed in Australia...the biggest handicap to them was their coats getting gummed up with biddybid...one my father had was an excellent rabbit dog...and accounted for many many runners and kits in the burrows.

sort of like this, but much worse...

I have an Australian terrier(Tilly)and I regally shear her. Helps with biddy Bids and keeps her cool. Absolutely shit sacred of anything except cows. I work her on stock sometimes and she is completely fearless, but show her a rabbit or possum and no way. One of the best complain dogs around and is an absolute joy to own. Low hair shedding is a bonus also.

LOL I always assumed she was a pommy dog.

Little Sarahs legs were tiny & her hair was long so she would get stuck in the slightest hint of black berry

Still remember picking her up around Xmas time at six weeks old, so small she could stand with all fours on my hand & happily sit in my Bush Shirt pocket with her front paws & head sticking out

The double takes people would do when seeing her, many though she was a possum

When I was training my GWP pup with the 20 ga shotgun for steadyness to the shot, she would take off ( ususally when allowed ) and almost always come back with the plastic wad.
I expect it smelt like cocaine to a gundog.
