    Pippi is too sensitive to go zapping, she requires gentle bossing, unlike the other one known as "little shit" - give him a boot in the bum and he is all " is that a size 9? I like size nines, what's for dinner?"

    Was hunting with mate the other day.his big TOUGH dog was away "helping" the possum dog... A little tone...no zap,just a beep and he came scooting back to boss man really quickly....I guess the tone being on neck,beside ears means they can't pretend they don't hear it... I have always hated e collars but I have seen the good when used correctly by responsible owner. Heck mate hardly raises voice to dogs let alone pick up a stick.... Pippi has a good wise boss.she wouldn't be getting a zap unless it was absolutely necessary to keep her safe etc. your too good of man for me to fear otherwise.

    Yes, that's actually a good idea. The vibration key is super handy for recall in deep bush when you don't want to call out/whistle to a dog out of visual range. Again, this should only be introduced post training, and only used to supplement training commands (verbal and hand signs). 99% of the time, I just wait and he circles back, but if he has pushed too far, it's a good reminder.

    The "zap" is pretty nasty, having tested it, I have it on the lowest setting to get a response from mine. Use it rarely and only when he is doing something negative and out of line. With correction it has to happen within 3 seconds of the event, or the dog won't associate the act with the stimulus. I made a mistake a year ago and didn't react to possums sitting on a track at night. My dog looked at me and then chased them. Has resulted in a few false stalks and waits, and kills since. Caught a possum on the property the other day, so did one remedial session with the possum and collar. Took one zap and he wasn't having a bar of it. Tested him yesterday, and took a wide birth on a frozen possum left on the lawn when he was locked inside.

    One other feature that is super handy is the "continuous" light on the dog's collar that you control through the Alpha - select the dog, then under settings select continuous. I use this walking in the dark and use the flashing setting when walking out on last light for dog saftey.

    Stuck in town at the mo, wife took the other thing for a walk so I could spend half an hr playing soccer with pips wearing her new collar to get her started, no inputs or training, just soccer. No botheration about the collar, she is only a wee thing so the collar is quite heavy in comparison, am on the very last hole though and it's only just tight enough.

    Suggest only have the collar out when it is "business time: Either training or hunting. They soon learn to associate the collar with being "on the tools"

    Just got a t25 for my month 6month heading dog. He’s pretty good on all fronts. Has good sit, behind, stay, stop as a mix of verbal / whistle / and hand signals but not quite rock solid yet. I’ve got lots of bush around me so has had quite a bit of the time in there and a bit of ‘stalking’ (hind barked at us last week) and got his first deer a couple weeks ago (he did nothing, just tagged along for a farm shoot and was his first time next to the gun going off, got to see a dead deer, all that jazz).

    I got the collar as an insurance policy (my wife wasn’t super keen on a dog but now loves him to bits) and was thinking of how to use it. Reading this thread was good as it reassured my thinking that I don’t want to use it as a filler for not enough training and I reckon it’ll be as MD points out, only when it’s to keep him safe, or to get him clued up on stuff or kiwis, possums, don’t chase things run after the shot, etc.

    Anyone else have any thoughts or principles for using them?
    @257weatherby how’s Pippi going?

    Anyone tried the Dogtra Pathfinder II? It apparently links to your phone and you can track them there. I don't really want another GPS - especially one with a terrible battery life. I charge my phone anyway when out for days. The dogtra also has a feature where you can set up a perimeter or e-gate. Has a separate basic remote.

    I like the idea of it but the remote only has one button and you need to select in the app whether it’s tone or shock

    The app is free to download so you can check it out before you decide which is what iv done but decided not to go ahead due to the one button
