Agree..... had read a similar description of this incident previously, and like this one am left wondering about the detection of a 'weak' signal from a PLB? No earlier detections from the PLB despite them initiating a response very early in the piece, and the report notes that they were not able to draw any conclusions about how the victim ended up where he did. How/when did the beacon get activated?

Retiring after 32 years in Land Sar I can say some of the best friends I have made were and still are loyal and dependable members...but it is not for the faint-hearted... there were some times that were total elation having acheived a great result returning members back to their families, but sometimes losing people in difficult situations that you have no control over which especially applies to losing children and does take an emotional toll.....as hunters and outdoors men & women, campers and trampers we have a ready, totally competent well managed and skilful organisation. And bear in mind that these people are all volunteers providing a service that bears very, very, little cost to the NZ taxpayer. The total support we get from our Police Force, ongoing support from the Airforce for operations and training exersises is rarely measured in dollars. The other most important part of our service continues to be the generosity of our members business' and employers who allow us to be free to do the work and almost without fail continue to pay us whilst we are on operations....So next time you see a SAR volunteer, go up to them, shake their hand and 'say thank you for your work' And to all you other mates that think you might like to lend a hand...do not hesitate you will never regret it.... Thanks for the service mate. If it were not for volees throughout nz in several sectors, this country would be in a bigger mess than it is.

Now that I'm back in the Nelson area I'll be switching back to this SAR area
